One galaxy + three observatories = lots of information (and beauty!) from NGC 1672!

Visible-light data from Hubble, along with X-ray data from @ChandraXRay and infrared observations from @NASAWebb, combine in this amazing view 60 million light-years away: go.nasa.gov/3MOWR3p

Space Life Science-1 (SLS-1), launched on Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-40) #OTD in 1991, was the first Spacelab mission dedicated to life sciences research AND the first NASA mission to have 3 women on board.

Research took place in a module, shown here, in Columbia's cargo bay.

Cataclysmic explosions in weightlessness are beautiful from light years away. Some poor slob surveying an obliterated planet anywhere near there might not think much of it, but from here, that's gorgeous.

Will I learn that the people who designed the space shuttle as a concept later designed and built the Apollo platform and then quit because congress was micromanaging their shuttle design? Literally walked out of board meetings in the design stage because politics forced it into the monstrosity it became and later blew up from.

To me this image shows a humble shepherd who has climbed to the peak of a mountain and pierced the firmament that bounds the dome of the sky over our earthly realm. (Note that the Sun and Moon are part of this realm.) Now he is getting his mind blown by the wonders of the celestial realms beyond ordinary knowledge.

He's probably going to go found a cult.

Calling all tabletop gamers! Have you ever wondered about the “alignment” of various cosmic objects?

For #InternationalTabletopDay, we sorted some Hubble views of our universe into different alignments. ⬇️
#Hubble

Lawful: Grand design spiral galaxies

“Grand design” spirals earned their nickname because of their very well-defined, distinct spiral arms. Spiral galaxies are actively forming stars and make up a large amount of all the galaxies in our nearby universe!
#Hubble

Neutral: Lenticular Galaxies

These “in-between” galaxies have traits of both spiral and elliptical galaxies: they host a central bulge of tightly packed stars, but they lack arms. Like ellipticals, lenticulars have older stars & little star formation.
#Hubble

Chaotic: Quasars

A quasar is a beacon of intense light from the center of a distant galaxy that can outshine the entire galaxy. Powered by hungry black holes, they devour a lot of gas and dust that gets heated to high temperatures, and they unleash a torrent of radiation.
#Hubble

"This is the greatest experience, it's just tremendous."
