This sort of thing is infuriating: Connecticut Parents Arrested for Letting Kids, Ages 7 and 9, Walk to Dunkin' Donuts. Kids need to develop independence away from their parents and "stranger danger" is overblown. reason.com/2023/01/30/dunkin-d…
in reply to kottke.org

At 9 I walked a half mile through Hollywood Hills to the grocery store with my younger brother (or alone!); we also just wandered our neighborhood independently.

I feel so lucky. It was wonderful.

In grade two — and I'm not exaggerating here — I had to take three buses, 45 km (~30 miles), and it took roughly an hour. Same thing on the way home.

The Sunday before school started, my mom took me on a dry run and, after it was done, said, "ok, you remember, right? Don't get lost."

Sometimes on the way home, if I felt like it, I'd skip the first two busses and walk the 5 km (3 miles) to where I caught the third bus.

I encourage designers of fediverse software to take a local-first approach:

Eg a mobile client app ought to be storing enough data on the device that I can read my notifications and timelines offline. Obviously I would only see posts up to the last time the device was connected to the net, and recall of older posts would be limited by a sane storage limit. I'd also like to be able to post of reply while offline, and have those posts sent the next time I connect. The UX would need some thought, but surely it's possible for apps to be used offline without freaking out.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

If you dig just a little pretty much everything you do makes you a bad person, so if you want to play a video game then do, if you don't then don't. That's all there is to it, and this is the last I'm saying about this.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

As always, I have no idea whats going on in the world again. Ahh, just noticed, it's Twitter. I would use Twitter only for business reasons, nothing else.

Judging from the text and video footage, it's nothing new. People try to make others bad feeling for having wrong console, playing wrong game (remember Cyberpunk?) or just even having a wrong opinion. I don't care them. If people cannot argument and discuss, then just forget about them. Why even react to it... ?

Have fun and .

As we (humans) get to grips with how to scale up #hydrogen as an energy source (and for energy storage) and as part replacement for #fossilfuels, this new research (once again) shows that #microbes have beaten us to it and evolved their own solutions for energy - in this case using hydrogen power.

This new research in Nature Microbiology explores how hydrogen in seawater supports growth of multiple and diverse #bacterial species.

Fof those (like me) in #Melbourne , you may be interested that the research also includes study of this process within #PortPhillipBay sediments.

Ouch, it's €54 with duties and shipping to Germany. But, if your half-joke about going to Amsterdam to see the Vermeer exhibit wasn't just a joke, I can buy one directly from you*.

*Some conditions apply, namely that you'd also have to be there on the 9th-10th of March 😬.
