I'm very pleased to announce a 2-year postdoc position in physical oceanography working with Peter Gaube, @jeffreyearly, and myself.

We have an exciting project studying eddies in along-track altimeter data using cutting-edge techniques, with the potential to radically enhance our ability to observe the ocean's eddy field.

If you are interested in becoming an expert in ocean data analysis, this is a fantastic opportunity.

In the 1980s, one of the ways into West Berlin (which was completely surrounded by East Germany) was a 103-miles stretch of autobahn. Here's an instructional video from 1988 on how to make the journey safely, e.g. don't speak Russian! kottke.org/23/03/the-rules-for…
in reply to kottke.org

Fantastic!

Brings back some memories of the many times I hitch hiked that route in the 80s. Just disappointed there wasn’t an instructional video to prepare me.

in reply to kottke.org

when I was a child, my family drove that route in the 1970s and it was pretty much a normal drive, if you were a civilian. There were tall concrete walls on both sides of the autobahn to prevent us from being entranced by the workers’ paradise but that was about it.

The trip from Gutenberg to Berlin via ferry and rail was for more surreal (they boarded up the train’s windows and police in fancy uniforms patrolled the aisles).

The mastodon.social server is currently under a heavy DDOS attack and may not work properly.

The 12,164 other servers on the network are unaffected.

This is part of the reason why federated networks are a good idea: if one server goes down, the others work fine.

The more spread out we are on small and medium sized servers, the harder it is for anyone to take down the network because there's no obvious target.

There are also many other reasons why federation is good: fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse…
