Webb’s vision has revealed more details about Earendel. Now we know it's more than twice as hot and about a million times more luminous than our Sun!

Based on colors observed with Webb, astronomers think Earendel may have a companion star, too: go.nasa.gov/3Ovd9iJ
#Hubble

Hubble broke records by observing the farthest star ever detected, Earendel!

Thanks to a lucky cosmic alignment, the gravity of a galaxy cluster between us & Earendel magnified the star’s light: go.nasa.gov/47pbT9w

Now, we know more about it with @NASAWebb on the job! ⬇️

We are excited to announce The hpc.social (Virtual) Noodles Award! 🥳

Dump (virtual) noodles on someone’s noodle!

Have you ever stumbled across a decision made in tech, high performance computing, or software that made you want to dump noodles on someone's head that made it so? No? Then it's a good time to start! We are presenting the first annual Noodles Award - a celebration and vote for the top bad life decisions (related to our work) that we have seen this year! 🍜

All about the Perseid meteors, which are actually small pieces of space debris that originate from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle go.nasa.gov/3OQ7e9s
#NASASolarSystem

The meteors are coming! ☄️ The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of Aug. 12-13. It's a great time to watch for meteors, sometimes called "shooting stars" – especially if you have access to clear, dark skies away from city lights. youtu.be/Nz6m-9MZSmE?t=65

A wrinkle in spacetime reveals ancient Earendel✴️
The most distant star is seen by @NASAWebb because a massive galaxy cluster bends light, allowing us to look through it like a magnifying glass. Based on its colors, astronomers think Earendel may have a cooler companion star!…

where can I get one w/o the cheap disco lights on it?

maybe I get a good price even, given they don't have to unnecessarily throw LEDs in it

really curious how you got RE5 running. I tried with ProtonGE (8-11) as well as with Proton Experimental and wmp11 via steamtricks and didn't got it to work. ProtonGE gets stuck on launch/steam logo, stock proton doesn't show the video cutscenes.

Check out this patchwork of well-preserved mud cracks that @MarsCuriosity found. They show a history of wet-dry cycles on early Mars, which scientists think could have provided conditions for microscopic life to form. Latest findings: go.nasa.gov/3QtgykZ

old-school DnD players just see a hex mat that needs old lines cleaned off of it. 😆

So, this is … disastrous.

mastodon.social/@packetcat@ten…

Mastodon.social is adding full text. That's not what concerns me right now.

The problem is that "get your account indexed in full-text search" is *the same option* as "have your account listed in 'search for account by name'".

The result is that people are now turning this option off en masse. (Even before the option rolls out, meaning if Eugen changes his mind, the damage will be done). It will soon be basically impossible to find an account
