It was surreal to see this come up on my feed. My bspwm setup is based off of your old vids, my nvim setup is a zombie frankenstein built from theprimeagen's base build. I hope this vid gets lots of views.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Wow, that one caught me by surprise. So cool to see you two chat, I just love chaotic energy!

it's sad that the #RustConf 2023 talks aren't uploaded yet

according to someone involved with the project, it's due to a lack of resources, and loss of relevant staff

it's a shame, i'd love to see what the talks were about

Reinstalling a phone is always stressy. It's so much more obscure and blackboxy than installing Linux on a laptop. :think_disappointed:

in reply to Luka Prin/ce Lucija

thanks @luka and sorry, badly phrased question.

I've been interested in trying out /e/OS for a while. Do you like it? Any big issues? I've heard things like banking apps can have problems.

in reply to Fionnรกin

@ephemeral @luka hey, I like it and have no banking app problems. I'm based in Belgium and have local banks. The /e/ app lounge can give you access to the gโ‚ฌโ‚ฌgle play store with an anonymous login.
A similar workaround can be installing aurora store through fdroid.
in reply to Fionnรกin

@ephemeral @luka the biggest issue is the updates stopping, almost a year ago. I don't know why, so that's why I'm reinstalling
I like it very much, did two specific tweaks (lay-out of phone in general and add camera app through a tricky process)
in reply to dywen

@luka great, thanks. Interesting about the app store workaround, that could be very handy. I'd heard of some issues before but willing to give it a try. Would love to be done with android..
in reply to Fionnรกin

@ephemeral I'm using it for a few years now on a galaxy s7, still has updates (?) @wendy
and banking apps are working for me; I only had problems with a crappy drone controller app ... it feels getting better imho, and I'm pretty happy with the privacy feature (tracker blocking)
@luka
in reply to Olm-e

@olm_e I wonder if the updates depemd on your phone model/capabilities. Thanks for this anyway, I'm sold on having a go anyway. @wendy @luka
in reply to Fionnรกin

@ephemeral
I bought a FairPhone 3 with /e/OS installed.

very happy. there were some issues with my banking app but that was resolved in a year or two as I (and some others) pressed a little.

their App Lounge is perfect - it blends transparently F-droid repos with anonymous google play in single search.

last update of the system is dated january 9 2024.

i think buying a fairphone with e/os is great combo.

i was on reddit yesterday and saw a comment by another trans woman called lynne (the least common spelling of "lyn", btw) who thinks rabbits are cute. what does this mean

Ooh, nice to hear @caseynewton and Kevin Roose talk about media co-ops like Defector on Hard Fork: nytimes.com/2024/01/26/podcastโ€ฆ

But I disagree that public funding isn't necessary. The market is inadequate for a healthy news ecosystem. Always has been.

More research on co-op news: ntnsndr.in/StakeholderNews

in reply to Josh Davis

@GuerillaOntologist well, the initial funders didn't exactly bailโ€”the Sun got a huge grant from a doomed crypto startup and were wise enough to take it in dollars:) To your earlier points! But yes, it is a powerful example of what could be possible if co-op models had more access to significant early stage capital.

With RMEOC, the @coloradosun recently shifted to a more resilient worker control modelโ€”legally a nonprofit, but worker self-directed. Huge success story.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@GuerillaOntologist @coloradosun I think Civil had some interesting ideas, including a "supreme court" model to anchor the token system in human values, and plans for a cooperative insurance program for newsrooms.

yesterday I wrote a weekly note, and today it lives on my website which is updated with new homegrown "software" (more like a hacky php smol-script, always under construction) and some design improvements. there's also recent music and some other hidden gems.

i'm tiny little bit proud and very excited - finally a way forward for self-publishing and self-archive, including in realm of #BeYourOwnPlatform

maybe soon also self-hosting from home (instead of from a VPS)?

Fascinating article about the Australian accent(s).

This rhetorical question in the article cracks me up: Does "France" rhyme with "pants" or "aunts"? It doesn't even occur to the journalist that "pants" and "aunts" might be pronounced the same way, and I have heard young Australians using the Western US pronounciation of "aunts" as rhyming with "pants".

Having anything but a clearly Australian accent is a liability in this country, and makes it hard to find employment. More so than in some countries.

Australian accents are changing across different regions, generations, and cultures

ALL domesticated animals can prove dangerous to the ecosystem when they go feral. The animals that have wreaked the most damage, including bringing other species to extinction, are the rat, the cat, and the dog. I have all of my pets neutered. For my cats I also keep them indoors and provide an enclosed cat run, so they can't eat the local fauna. Even so, they end up catching the odd frog or mouse who gets into their enclosure. Neutering also provides many health benefits such as a calmer animal who is less likely to suffer from various genital cancers.

The bark side: domestic dogs threaten endangered species worldwide
