I can "feel" the oddly near horizon. I feel like I can smell the iron fines from the airlock where I suited up. The radiation exposure starts adding up immediately, but it would still be amazing to see.

The Art of the Logo Refresh. Designer Jessica Hische talks about how she smartens up the logos of companies who aren't looking for a complete rebrand. kottke.org/23/02/the-art-of-th…
in reply to kottke.org

Reminds me of the story of the DEC “digital” logo. It was a hand-drawn logo designed in 1957, but it closely resembled Helvetica. So people at DEC who didn’t have the asset handy just simulated it by typing it in Helvetica and scaling it. But one employee knew that was wrong and tacky. So in 1987, he painstakingly recreated the original logo in postscript to create a standardized asset. nedbatchelder.com/blog/200712/…
in reply to kottke.org

@jessicahische is obviously an amazing talent. Her works seems simple and that is the art and the work.

The only really glaring weakness there is the bit about the engine size -- I mean, yeah, but my electrics eat a lot more than that with the battery. Well, that and I think they'd find the whole concept of a "reverse" gear crazypants.

Bypass Paywalls Vanishes From Firefox Addon Store #Linux #Firefox #Mozilla #YouTube youtu.be/aedMVkINsIo
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Instead of paying your developers to implement stuff properly, you go after open source projects that make it easy to circumvent your paywall. This is frankly a bit dumb to me. I understand wanting to put your stuff behind a paywall, but this is just ignoring the problem, not solving it.

I was reminded of the imagination sundial.

robhopkins.net/2020/06/30/intr…

It's kinda catch-all but nonetheless a nice inspiration. I'm interested where the concept of struggle might fit in. I see imagination here feeding into creation but no mention of it feeding the creative duality of destruction...

Which in turn reminds me of this video which I will send out to the Ministers of the Future email list when it goes live on YT:

@danwchan I like the imagination sundial. I think things like that are necessary for a vast repertoire of tools to achieve change. Struggle fits because the status quo won't be replaced peacefully. The status quo is violent from the jump. In biotech you see the behavior with patent trolling. Even though no one org can serve the world, knives are drawn the second there's competition. I believe these social relations will be an obstacle we will struggle against.

is there any basis for expecting it in the next major release? For example the most recent major release 3.4 was announced to include changes from upstream packages. But I don’t recall anything like that for 3.3 or 3.2.

Fears about nuclear energy, and nuclear waste in particular, have been overstated. "We should celebrate what humankind can achieve with clean energy: a high quality of life for everybody, without the negative impacts of burning fossil fuels." zionlights.substack.com/p/ever…
in reply to kottke.org

I'm less concerned with the ideal use of nuclear power than I am with the institutions that run it. Our aging local nuclear plant failed to prevent and then adequately respond to unexpected degradation in new steam tubes, which leaked radiation. Maybe it shouldn't have killed the plant, but "Whoopsie! Didn't expect that," isn't a very reassuring message.

Why Everything You Buy Is Worse Now. "Sweaters are more likely to tear. Smart toasters and TVs burn out and die after only a few years. It might seem like consumer products just aren't built to last anymore. What's going on?" kottke.org/23/02/why-everythin…

My house has a 30-year-old built-in microwave that still works, if clunkily. Replacing it will cost about $800 for a similar unit and the custom mounting/venting equipment -- but that all-microwaves-are-the-same story you linked to the other week points out there's no guarantee a new unit will last more than 2-3 years. Heavy sigh.

The European Parliament has "formally approved a law to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035". reuters.com/business/autos-tra…
in reply to kottke.org

I would prefer it if the rules specified fuel efficiency / CO2 emission per km or whatever vs mandating or banning specific technologies. Right now it seems like some hybrid cars are every bit as efficient as electric, and hybrid biodiesel is a real option.

That said, e-bikes plus public transport seem better yet.

in reply to kottke.org

the used gas-powered vehicle market is going to be insane in 2035 at this rate.
