Starstruck? 🌟

This Hubble image shows star cluster M92. About 27,000 light-years away, it’s one of the oldest globular clusters in our galaxy.

Globular clusters are roughly spherical groupings of stars held together by their gravitational attraction: go.nasa.gov/41l5Jo8
#Hubble

in reply to NASA

I often wonder what the night sky would look like near the centre of one of these globular clusters

M92 was also one of @NASAWebb's first science observations, partially to test how well Webb observes stars that are densely packed together. Plus, Webb operates at longer wavelengths and is able to detect smaller, fainter stars in shorter amounts of time: go.nasa.gov/41gVa5o
#Hubble

If you're curious about the empty portion, the center of M92 is very bright, so Webb isn’t able to capture it at the same time as the fainter stars at the edges.

Webb’s new observations can be combined with Hubble's existing data, allowing astronomers to learn more about M92.

This article doesn't tell me anything terribly new. However, I don't know a lot about VPNs. Are they everything they say they are on the label?

How websites can still easily track you in incognito mode

"The best way to be really secure is to abandon standard software altogether. You’ll need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which encrypts your internet connection and hides your IP address without logging your usage – you can ask it to pretend you are connecting from almost anywhere in the world. You’ll need to use a specialised search engine with tracking protection, such as DuckDuckGo, StartPage, SearchEncrypt or Qwant. You’ll need a specialised private browser, which bounces your searches via multiple servers around the world to hide your origin. And for the ultimate secret browsing, you might boot your computer from a special operating system designed with privacy in mind."

in reply to Muse

Using a VPN to ensure that a malicious public WiFi access point can't access your traffic also makes sense - in fact I sometimes use a VPN where I run the endpoint myself for this purpose. It doesn't provide any anonymity but does add some safety.

Why We Need Even More Linux Distros!?! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/K5Vx0n5jstU
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Actually... I don't know, it's a hard topic.

There's good and bad diversity, and they are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

We have three-ish package managers that basically do the same thing but slightly different, around which we have three-ish bases. What's the difference between them? None of importance, really, it's just that the packages from one don't work on another. Great.

Before that, we had the zoo of init systems. There were differences between them enough to make them incompatible, not enough to justify separation.

This is not good diversity, it doesn't add to the experience, it just creates confusion.

And then, there's the problem of choice paralysis. The more diverse choice you have, the harder it is to choose, the more cognitive load on the chooser. Let's say, I'm new to Linux. Which distro do I choose? What if I choose wrong? I don't know, let's spin the wheel!

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I'm really interested in projects like silverblue but I doubt I could daily drive it for a decent length of time. I also like the idea of vanilla OS, but I'd likely run out of storage quickly with it. Of course there other cool distros as well and I agree we need more of them.

I'm really excited to see what new stuff will come out. I feel like a huge tidal wave of improvements and new has been coming to linux in recent years and I'm glad to be a part of it.

- Broot: better navigation of directory trees.
- dust: “du on steroids”.
- dyff: diff for yaml.
- miller, a CSV multitool.
- LazyDocker and LazyGit, CLI improvements for Docker and Git respectively.

We bought our Energy Recovery Ventilator pretty much immediately after I took my CO2 monitor, purchased for traveling spot-checks, home. It fixed the problem. Fortunately the office levels checked out okay.

Why is part of this view black? The core of this cluster is too bright to capture at the same time as the fainter stars at the edges. In this format, Webb’s data also overlaps nicely with existing @NASAHubble data, allowing scientists to combine both sets to learn something new.

Here are two different Carpentries links of interest: First the "HPC Carpentry" incubator one I mentioned earlier, meetings alternate Thursdays at two times to accommodate people in various locations: gitlab.com/hpc-carpentry/incub… and also one looking to produce an introduction to Singularity: carpentries-incubator.github.i…. Both are looking for feedback and others to get involved, so please jump in if you think you can help!
in reply to Alan Sill

Interesting! Most interesting! (Need to get my head around Containers anyway.)

I think the hpc-carpentry entry on snakemake is pretty outdated since the introduction of native SLURM support (and the fact that many clusters use SLURM). So, I am contemplating jumping aboard one of the carpentries.

You mentioned alternating Thursday meetings? Is there info somewhere? (My head is exploding, will go offline line and before it is forgotten ....)
