On February 14, 2023, an astronaut aboard the @Space_Station photographed a landslide in a canyon near İslahiye in southeastern Türkiye.

İslahiye is one of several towns and cities where large numbers of homes were damaged or destroyed by the earthquakes.

I am very happy to report that our recent work on integrating protein structures and population genetics through metagenomics is finally out:

This work was led by Evan Kiefl, a recent graduate of our group, who is not on mastodon. Thanks to his efforts, this study yields new open-source tools, bioinformatics workflows, and insights into evolution and its governing principles.

Hey NASA! Great account! I’d love to embed some of these images and video elsewhere, but you’re blocking Mastodon’s embed feature. Any chance you could allow that?

Happy to see that OTF is offering a FOSS sustainability fund opentech.fund/news/open-techno…

I would love to see funding that focuses exclusively on building stability and scope through localization and refining and improving onboarding for devs, maintainers and users. IMO, if these things are not happening, you are not future proofing, and for sure are not threat modelling for burnout. There should be small grants that support current devs / maintainers to build more accessible docs.

There’s a meetup happening in the western sky: the crescent Moon sits close to Jupiter, with Venus below them. Jupiter and Venus will continue to cozy up until March 1, when they’ll be at their closest.

Have you spotted these three in the sky? Snap a picture and send it to us!

Flycast emulator for Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2 gets a big upgrade gamingonlinux.com/2023/02/flyc… #SEGA #Emulation
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

It's great that Dreamcast emulation is so accurate. Seems like because there was no follow up system, a lot of amazing games ended up "trapped" on the Dreamcast, but are still totally playable today. The DC (or an emulator) is still the best way to play Marvel vs Capcom 2, Power Stone 2, and many others.

Masks work! Amazing study of 26 elementary schools that pulled wastewater samples every 15 minutes. Researchers observed the masked percentage in the school. “The odds of a positive wastewater signal in the 5 days after one of these observations decreased by 47% for each 10% increase in the proportion of people who were fully masked."

“It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Even a little nudge can keep kids safer at school.”

First time trying to make vegetable charcuterie. Boiled beets and carrots, peel, salt for 2 days, dust some #koji on, and hope it blooms. #food #cooking #fermentation
in reply to Silent G

is it possible to salt less or would that open up the ferment to more contamination?
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan yes, I misread the instructions and just put a bunch of salt in. Supposed to only be 1.75% salt by total weight of vegetables! Not sure how that affects the fermentation, but after the mold is grown, it’s dehydrated to ~50% initial weight, so it ends up being about 3.5% salt internally
