The quick guideline used to be: would you be ok with what you’re saying showing up on the front page of the NY Post? (What’s the digital source of scurrilous gossip these days? You could drop that in instead of the Post.)

or for the simpler Socratic filter: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

@elisegThe people who are to be reached do the following:
1. they do not read it
2. when they read it, they don't understand it.
3. if they read it and understand it, they don't want it.

there’s a three step test that i give myself all of the time:

- does it need to be said
- does it need to be said right now
- does it need to be said right now by me

only posting if you can answer yes to all three is a good gut check in potentially sensitive situations 🖤

oh wow, I didn't realize she's over here! She's great! 😊 Such wonderful wisdom in playful form. Thanks for posting this nice one.

An important one that helped me recently against what sounds like "bait": Am I trying to explain very basic knowledge? Does this person sound like they are trying to ignore generally agreed upon ideas in favor of sounding controversial? I often refrain from commenting when the answer to those questions is "yes".

8 - is my comment an unsolicited advice? I know that not everybody is fine with that
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

YES !! this is actually a very good set of rules should've been like one of the posters they put on the computer labs we played at in my ye ol schools
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Good advice! But sometimes it is just when you don't follow the rules when things are getting interesting.

#4 "Would I be ok with my comment if it was made public" seems superfluous since it literally *is* public.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Add "Would anyone else really care about what I have to say?" to that list, and that's basically the list of why rarely post anything.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

often after writing a post I ask myself these questions... and then erase 😅 (especially the public thing)

Love this! I wish we didn't have to write how-to's to treat people with respect, but I suppose that is the way of the world anymore..
