I'm back at the Kielderhead Wildwood, five years on from when I first started working with them as artist in residence through VARC (Northumberland UK).

Five years ago, all that was on site was a lot of low-lying brush and thousands of trees in deer-guards.

From the main site of the wildwood that was first planted in 2017-18.

First photograph is 2021, the second is 2025.

Me and two others planted a stand of 200 birch and rowan trees out on the moor in 2021.

It rained sideways, hailed, and snowed, and we carried heavy equipment over very rough terrain. We named it Varda Wood, after Agnés Varda. The trees were whips, inside tubes, no more than half a metre tall.

Now some of them are taller than I am.

I chose to come back in summer this time, because I wanted some of the trees to be in leaf. I underestimated how much the bracken would hide them in photos. In any case, I think it's visible in the photos how much they have grown. My apologies to anyone with colour issues.
