in my opinion, we should blame it on the BSD / MIT style licenses that require nothing from downstream.

Corporations have access to thousands of libraries at no cost and no restrictions... People in general don't appreciate things that come easy, and tend to be irresponsible towards those things.

Does the added unpaid maintenance burden worth it now, that due to choosing MIT vs GPL, hundreds of proprietary junk use your code? I don't think so.

@nicemicro The licences are powerless unless the developer decides to use them so you should be blaming the developers for choosing a permissive licence which I don't think is the best way to approach the situation, in many cases devs are just making something to solve a personal problem and think "hey, maybe someone else has the same problem"

as I said in the YT comment, people promote the BSD and MIT licenses as "the license to use if you want your code to be used by corporations and become popular".

I don't blame anyone for using any license, it is their right to license their own creative work however they want under applicable law. But if you literally let anyone to do anything with the code without giving back... remember you let them do that.

@nicemicro Here's another example, if you setup a stand that has free fruit on it, the people taking the fruit should not be under the false assumption that you're doing anything more than offering free fruit, if there happens to be no fruit that day or a poor selection of fruit unless they want to start paying you for the fruit there concerns only matter as much as you care about them

The only thing I said is that in your analogy, you shouldn't be surprised that someone took half the oranges and made a lot of money on orange juice without giving anything back to the community.

My argument is, that if as a dev you are concerned for the community, stipulate a license that stipulates that the orange juice one makes of the free orange should also be free.
