The catch is that the media files are under a very restrictive license, forbidding any use outside of Arma games (i.e. literally >99.9% of games) and any commercial use.

Will probably be a lot of work until this actually becomes a fully free-as-in-freedom game.

4th and 5th are very important! Btw, two more points can be added

(1) You're ready to sacrifice when libre replacement to your favorite proprietary software is not available

(2) You starts donating to libre projects to support its development. This is far ethical than purchasing proprietary license/subscription.

So, is what you're saying that the average "Linux" user somehow(!?) still hasn't caught up to the GNU in GNU/Linux? Or doesn't distinguish between downloading opaque binaries (flatpak anyone?) and programs built from source by your distribution or by yourself. How could that have happened? /S

GNU meaning: we only run free software, and all free software can be compiled to run on GNU/Linux.

Free software movement focuses on freedom, but not friendly to the commercial world.

Open source movement emerged from free software movement. It replaced freedom with software development methodology. It is absolutely friendly to the commercial world.

Open core is the natural next direction of open source. It is friendly to the commercial world, but it is also friendly to the pocket of the developers.

Next, returning to 100% proprietary software as a way of life.

Edit: I am not against proprietary software. I am using Excel daily.

The End (of Windows 10) is nigh!

On 14 October, #Microsoft will end support for #Win10.

This will turn hundreds of millions of computers that cannot upgrade to #Win11 into security risks and #eWaste.

Yours may be one of them!

But what if you could make your current one fast and secure again?

It's finally time. After years of deliberation, #Minetest is finally ready to adopt a new identity and prove it has moved beyond its original purpose. We can finally move past the "mining" and the "testing" and focus on making this platform the best it can be.

very important episode!

as the resident "zealot", let me say, that objectively, #FreeSoftware is a better term than #OpenSource, with the caveat, that this is true for every language that is not as silly as English, and actually have a distinct word for "free of charge", instead of using the same word as for liberty.

one of many reasons for supporting this #FSFE campaign:

"Public Money? Public Code!"

Thanks to everyone who already gave input on the topic of #OpenWashing !

As many companies claim to be working on “Open Source” or “Free Software” while distributing proprietary software products, we at the @fsfe would like to learn more about current market practices.

We're interested in your views and experiences on openwashing! You can submit them here:

Please spread the word, any input is welcome!

in my opinion, we should blame it on the BSD / MIT style licenses that require nothing from downstream.

Corporations have access to thousands of libraries at no cost and no restrictions... People in general don't appreciate things that come easy, and tend to be irresponsible towards those things.

Does the added unpaid maintenance burden worth it now, that due to choosing MIT vs GPL, hundreds of proprietary junk use your code? I don't think so.

#FreeSoftware #GPL

Vim, Neovim, Emacs, and everything free software that can be compiled against whatever the distro maintainers put their minds to, keep winning.

Yet another reason we call the offending software "proprietary garbage".

#FreeSoftware #Linux

then we are back to square one, software companies have no problem exploiting their users, as long as their users don't care, and the FSF can't make the users care, because then "what about muh games".

The users don't do anything to force the devs to make free software, because if they took a stance that would mean no more playing with non-free software.

this is the circle of not giving a f*ck.

#FreeSoftware

We're now in feature freeze for #Minetest 5.8! This is a period of time before a release where we only do bug fixes

Highlights:

* Minetest no longer ships with a default game
* A redesigned Settings GUI
* Improved Android controls, can place nodes with single tap
* Improved antialiasing filters

it's funny how people don't understand that operating systems (just like all other software projects or products) are named by the devs as whatever they want. It's branding and trademarks.

the "Manjaro is not Arch Linux" is the same argument. Manjaro is whatever its devs call Manjro, Arch Linux is whatever its devs call "Arch Linux".
