It's not difficult to find places with dark skies not too far from cities.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the atmosphere scatters light and this causes some of it to appear to come from all around, including from above. And that this reduces the overall contrast of the night sky making dim stars harder to see.

this makes me sad. That we are denied the beauty of seeing the stars by light pollution. You don’t realise how little you can see until you go somewhere that is less light polluted. It is such a shame for us all

One of my favorite childhood memories is lying out on the lawn with my Dad, identifying stars and constellations. One of my favorite memories as an adult is my husband and lying on the lawn with our daughters, "ooohing" and "aaahing" at a meteor shower.

How many kids & parents are going to miss out on this? It makes me think of Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall" - will there eventually be places where people deny stars and meteors even exist?

true , light pollution is a big problem in many urban cities honestly , which is sad , however the countryside can give us beautiful results , check this out

#LightPollution is so extreme these days, I only managed to see the milky way at night in the middle of the Red Sea almost a decade ago.

City girl here, went camping recently in the Manzano Mts of NM and omg, couldn’t get enough of that sky! At about 8K ft during a low light moon phase; what a stunner. I slept in the hammock so every time I woke I could stargaze. Magical. ✨ I want more of that.
