If you enjoy using Mastodon for Android, please consider leaving a positive rating or review on the Play Store, because a lot of people who do leave reviews are like this:
As far as I remember you can just ask them to get rid of reviews like those that got nothing to do with the app itself and they'll then scrub them. Probably worth a try for those…
if i go to see other posts from other people i don’t follow and want to explore some new accounts, it’s absolutely like those comments stated, so they aren’t wrong, but it’s not THAT insane like bluesky is
It is to be expected that next 4 years at least the social media will be bombarded by the pro-Trump pro-Musk cult fanatics. Bluesky and Fediverse will be under attack in media (that belongs to Musk and Republicans) most likely.
Thanks for the reminder. Just left a four star review. Will bump up to five star when Mastodon finally releases the support for quote posts. This year, right? 😃
Wow, I had no idea... My first reaction was that a mandatory longer review text would cut down the "it's crap" opinions. But then the "prompt engineers" or whatever they are, would just spam everything with the gift that is AI.
lol, but these are POSITIVE reviews, the reviewers just don't realise it. They will never understand why people would want to have nothing to do with them, or listen to their endless bilge.....
hadn't even considered leaving a review but that's an absurdly low average rating for what amounts to Twitter 2.0. It's a social media platform that does what it says. Anything lower than 4 just doesn't make sense to me.
How do these reviews line up with the apple store for example?
I would suspect that a large number of people who use mastodon on android are more technology and privacy aware so avoid the play store app and obtain apps through f-droid, github or aurora store where possible
I'm using the f-droid version of the official app myself because I don't want a google account on my phone
5 stars from me, the app is awesome! Haven't had any issues whatsoever and it works (and looks) very well.
Maybe the store page could have some more visible info on it being only a client, not the whole service, though. This could help avoid the cited misunderstandings, though I am not sure how effective it would really be at stopping the more exasperated users...
Maybe it would be a good UX on a phone, but - it makes poor use of greater space on a large Android tablet. - three tries to add this account (I apparently switched to Tusky before splitting interests between this and original @n1vux ) is too many. Sorry, nope, I use multicolumn Web Mastodon 🦣 happily on desktop, but on tablet it's not there.
While I find the political-spam comments risable, were I to rate on Android GoogPlay store, it'd be
tbh if i didn't come into mastodon knowing who to follow id probably have quit immediately. The federated feed button is a horrible place I do not wish to go to.
I can't leave a rating in the "Google Play Store" simply because i don't use that Google-Crap. Publish your App at F-Droid or host the download elsewhere and i'm into it.
@codinghorror The web app will always be the primary interface for Mastodon, but the app stores are a significant driver of traffic, accounting for 37% of new sign-ups.
So you are saying that if there was a way to take the web app frontend code and deploy it as a native app, you could have an increase in the number of signups *without* having to develop and manage three separate codebases?
What surprises me is that these complaints don't even make sense since literally anyone can create a Mastodon server.
These guys could join any Mastodon server of any ideology they want, or even create their own. The best thing about Fediverse is that you can create your own spaces. These reviews are complete nonsense.
I don't see the problem with those reviews... unless your aim is to actually encourage the participation of fascists and their delusional minions. Those reviews deter precisely those who are a danger to civilization and sanity and encourage those who aren't.
I mean, they're not entirely wrong. I'm on Mastodon to network with people in the career I'm trying to shift to, yet it seems like even AFTER I block a bunch of instances and terms related to political topics, I still see plenty of hardcore left-leaning political topics (and no, it's not "just your instance").
If I even remotely express my views as a conservative and traditionalist, I get mobbed by the "Tolerance Squad" with all sorts of moronic takes because they can't accept that, I dunno, maybe SOME people on the Fediverse aren't aligned with their politics? An echo chamber is bad, no matter what direction it leans in.
Just my take. Like I said, I'm ultimately on the Fediverse to connect with people in IT, networking, cybersec and the like. I have extensive word block lists running, as well as a lot of instances that I've outright blocked, but any time politics do come up, they try to make me feel like a total monster because I DARE to be a very traditionalist, conservative Christian on the Fediverse. 🤷♂️

Coming to Mastodon from Twitter feels like busting in the door loudly brandishing a half drunk bottle of tequila and finding everyone sitting in horrified silence holding cups of tea and academic papers
Well, this is the point for me where I stop relying on ratings in the Play store. Probably I should stop relying on such ratings in general, everywhere.
Of course this is not helpful for you, this is just a note for myself (and for anyone who might read this).
Just try it, and see how it works, instead of judging by reviews that unknown, untrustworthy people or bots wrote.
It is interesting how people (perhaps intentionally) confuse "app", "server" and "server users" with each other. Also, I remember when the Fediverse got started, it generally had a reputation of being slightly to the right of Ayn Rand.
@shannonpersists Just goes to show the intelligence and understanding of those ones. "this app"... Fucksake. When can humankind get an upgrade from those lowbrains?
I always find it funny when right wingers do the red pill blue pill bit considering the red pill wakes you up thereby making you woke and the blue one lets you live in the past forever.
It would be easier to leave a positive review if Devs would stop breaking Mastodon. A few weeks ago I started getting the error 'No application exists to open the link,' or words to that effect. I have to copy and paste the link into a browser, so half the time I don't bother. That's on Mastodon for Android. Works fine on my Macbook.
@Greengordon The mobile app and the server software have separate versioning. The server is 4.3, the most recent Mastodon for Android version is 2.9.4. If the error persists, let me know.
It also is currently holding a rating of 4.8 in the Play Store, the majority of one stars are from the mass Twitter exodus with people who clearly have no clue how technology works at all and the vast majority are positive reviews. Still couldn't hurt to add positive ones to the pile.

"Refreshing social media platform.
Mastodon doesn't use algorithms to sort posts for you but rather shows you what you follow."
I'm pretty sure other people can highlight the other amazing features of Mastodon/app so it will show in the first few lines (before "see more")
