Is NixOS Actually Incredible!?! #Linux #YouTube https://youtu.be/aMT7EIiC46k

Why did you interview this guy? He spoke a lot without saying anything.

I think your YouTube section is full of people correcting Matt for the filesystem thing... The paths do exist /etc, /bin, /usr, but they have mostly symlinks to the /nix/store. Also /bin only has sh and /usr/bin only has env which is really surprising at first.

It is not a great distro to try a lot of weird software because you have to basically write a build script for every software because normal binaries/scripts don't work(they say nix-alien fixes this but I haven't tried it)

I think it wouldn't hurt to get someone on your podcast (or channel?) who can explain #Nix and #NixOS from the perspective of someone actually using it for a while
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@ck I've been using nix as my main OS for a few years now. I'm by no means an expert. I have submitted a package to the nix package repo.

Would be happy to chat with you about it.

Of the top of my head @davidak might be a good candidate. He's is (was ? ) on the #NixOS marketing team and has also done some #Nixos and gaming related streaming in the past. Might be a good fit.

I was convinced to first try Nix by the obsession on the Linux Unplugged podcast, and I've now been using it on all my prod machines nearly a year (after about 2 years on my first forever distro, Arch).
Chris Fisher would be a great guest.

@ck

I would recommend you reach out to tweag.io. Their employees are expected to maintain public presence to promote their consulting services. They would probably happily get on your platform, and many of them are contributors to nixpkgs, which is the more interesting and promising thing. NixOS is niche and not that interesting, but even if you're not on NixOS, nix makes a lot of developer headaches easier to deal with.

Brodie try NixOS.

I loved Arch, never thought I would ever switch, and now I could never imagine wanting to go back. The only thing I really miss about arch is how user friendly `yay` was.

NixOS embodies the "I want to touch every single aspect of my system" of Arch, but does it in a way that doesn't have package upgrades or config drift slowly reducing your system stability.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

yes it is, I was astounded that nobody recommended it to me when I was going through Arch, Gentoo and the like when NixOS has all of their advantages and none of their PITA. At the same time if you know what you want it’s both easier to use and more stable than “easy” distros like Ubuntu that shit the bed as soon as you try to venture off the beaten path. 9/10
