So i just released nix-system-graphics!
Ever felt tired by utilizing a plethora of NixGL hacks for simply running a graphical applications on another Linux distribution than NixOS? Well system-graphics emulates the same graphical stack as what #NixOS uses, meaning Nix and system package interoperation without any hacks.
Its quite magical, go try it out!

Just released nix-weather, a #rust cli-tool to check how many of your NixOS system’s build dependencies are in a binary cache.
$ nix-weather -n myhost -c /etc/config/
Found Nix Requisites in 8 seconds
Checked 2789 packages in 1 seconds
Found 2676/2789 (95.95%) in cache
This is useful to e.g. “check the weather” before going for an update. If the dependencies you want still haven’t been cached, it can be useful to know you can postpone an update to a later day when the weather is better on the cache.
Feel free to try it out from the GitHub mirror (it’s likely faster than my forgejo instance, and I’d appreciate saving the bandwidth).

Plus system is lightweight and hard to break.
I have been working on something, which is not totally ready.
Most of the deployment tools in the #NixOS ecosystem are tailored to... NixOS. NixOS can run in a bunch of places, but not easily on 256MB RAM devices and 32MB disk.
For that, you have plenty of options, one of them is #Liminix (https://www.liminix.org/).
Liminix is currently tailored to OpenWRT-class APs/routers and I worked on bringing support for the Zyxel NWA50AX (https://openwrt.org/inbox/toh/zyxel/nwa50ax). 1/???
"Big project problems" are certainly problems to have, word to #NixOS - because it is easy to FLAKE on community GOALS when CONTENTION is more important than CONSENSUS.
I'm DYING to know the outcome... *cough*...
Hey, I'm facilitating one of this years Summer of Nix groups, it's a paid opportunity to work on #nix and #nixos together with contributors. We don't have a strict skill level requirement, but you should have some prior programming experience. The application deadline is 10.05.2024 and for more information please visit: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/summer-of-nix-2024-call-for-participants/43249?u=janik

ignoring state files, it's usually a mess for WM without DE.
Many Linux/WM developers don't follow convention over configuration...
I recently tried #hyprland, which is currently the only WM/DE in stable #NixOS with wayland fractional scaling support.
And, I spent so much time to get just some bar/panel working, that was ugly and very limited in functionality compared to #GNOME shell (I used before.- very nice) or KDE, or XFCE.
I ended up switching to #KDE and NixOS unstable.
i appreciate that the #NixOS foundation has shipped a strictly improved sponsorship policy, apologized, and indeed *has* given the community a veto on sponsors in spite of its wording. congratulations to everyone who has put an unbelievable amount of work into making this happen!
there's a lot of work still to do on getting fascists out of the community and everyone is quite exhausted from the fight to get this passed. however. the fascists *will* get kicked out.

Dear community, First, we want to acknowledge the feedback from the community. We recognize that many of you invested countless hours in the project and deeply care about its state and direction.NixOS Discourse
The Nix project has had quite a bit of bad publicity in the last month for having Anduril sponsor NixCon NA.
I am very happy to see that —after admittedly way too much effort— we now finally have a sponsorship policy to prevent this from happening in the future. A big Thank You to all who contributed and pushed for this!
If you turned your back on Nix due to this, please consider accepting the apology from the Foundation Board.

Finally took some time to bust out the @PINE64 #pinebookpro and have some fun! I'd planned on flashing #nixos onto it, but everything I'd book from the image on my NVMe, I'd go through the whole rebuild and switch but it continued failing to boot into the new build... 🤔
Next best option, fresh install an #archlinux based system with great development record for the PBP, #manjaro , and manage everything with #nix. Turns out option #2 is still pretty awesome! 😎🤘 #linux
