By now, many of you have seen the footage of the monk (or mud wizard) facing off with hapless riot police during the defense of #Lutzerath this past weekend.

If you have not seen it, treat yourself to it now:

In fact, this mysterious figure already appeared in 2018, during the defense of the ZAD (the "Zone to Defend," a longtime squatted area where the residents blocked the construction of an airport) at Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

According to le Monde, the police ambushed the monk among a group of other defenders. The monk threw three buckets of water at the police, proclaiming "I baptize you in the name of the ZAD!" In the ensuing chaos, he made off with one of their batons.

Victory to the mud wizards! Defend the earth!

These scenes of destruction are not from Ukraine.

This is happening in Germany.
For coal mining.
In 2023.

Join us in #Lützerath tomorrow with @GretaThunberg@twitter.com to protest and oppose coal mining.

The largest coal mine of Europe is only:

40 minutes from Köln
2h from Amsterdam
2h from Brussels
5h from Paris

How far are you ? 👉 https://goo.gl/maps/kB4gf7HZeyz3v6bu8

Brave activists are still resisting the police eviction around the clock.

They use monopods, tunnels, ziplines and treehouses to slow down the destruction. ✊💛

The 280,000,000 Tons of coal under #Lutzerath must stay in the ground.

Join us on Saturday for the big action !

In 2018, German authorities wasted Millions of euros of public money to evict the forest of Hambach, on behalf of a coal company.

It failed.

The police operation was later ruled illegal in court.

The exact same thing is happening, again, in #Lützerath

Today in #Lützerath hundreds of people came to oppose the coal mining industry.

The crowd managed to get a bagger to stop.

Thousands more people will join in the coming days ✊

What you see on this photo is not from the Empire Strikes Back.

No, it is German police protecting a coal mine excavator in #Lützerath - a village planned to be demolished by the energy company RWE to extract coal that is not even needed for the energy security of Germany.
