It lasted longer than Burbn… (obscure Web 2.0 joke). But seriously, I did try Artifact but didn’t find it compelling. The founders got the timing just right with Instagram — right at the start of the smartphone app revolution. But I feel like their luck and timing was out this time…it’s now the start of the fediverse revolution, which will bring blogs and decentralized social media to the fore, not centralized apps like Artifact. medium.com/artifact-news/shutt…

Emoji Kitchen lets you make mashups of emoji, like a strawberry octopus, an airplane with sunglasses, cheese with monocle face, Earth with thinking face, and turtle with headphones. Very addictive to play around with. kottke.org/24/01/perfect-frida…
in reply to kottke.org

Nothing new is made in either of these apps. Both are merely selectors for thousands of prerendered mix-ups (likely created with the help of Stable Diffusion). And the results aren't particularly useful as emojis for most people, because they're PNGs and hence cannnot be used in text.

He's comparing a desktop OS to the two major mobile ones. To make this point, he must conveniently forget about Windows Phone in MS's history, which had similar policies as the App Store and Google Play. So you can scratch that 50-year track record.

Wonder why they don't work with Valve and actually use SteamOS? Maybe SteamOS isn't ready for other devices, or they'd need to fund the porting (which is probably done by 3rd party contractors anyway)?
in reply to popey

@popey I imagine SteamOS simply isn't ready yet, as it's so heavily tied to the Deck hardware, and Valve said only recently it's high on the list but people available for it were working on the OLED
in reply to popey

@popey And you have to think, and you'll know this well, supporting a whole distro is a huuuge undertaking, and Valve is actually in terms of people relatively small considering their monies
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Nice to see some competition in form of a lower powered device with a cheaper price than the steam deck show up. I have a few friends who really only want to play indies on the go, but would like the modifiability and flexibility and pricing of a PC game with that, so I think this is a perfect device for that purpose!

Also super unrelated, but I wonder if some kind of "comment by Fediverse" on GamingOnLinux would be a possibility at some point. 😀

I was filling out the survey when I wanted a new line.
I pressed shift+enter but it turns out my cursor was not in a text/form area.

It submitted the form without any confirmation. That's probably a bug?

I was answering dumb AI questions when it happened. So have fun parsing my answers up to that point.

Cheers 🥂

In case you haven't gotten sick of hearing me talk about this issue, I was on CBC-Yukon this morning talking about satellite pollution: cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-393…

The short version: satellites are super annoying for astronomy, but are completely terrifying for what they might do to the atmosphere as they deorbit in large numbers (and we don't actually know what they'll do - that's the scary part.)

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Honestly, even if they do this, I cannot see why linux distributions can't just make the alias themselves.

As you said, it is not an extra maintainance burden. Some distros already have aliases for stuff like 'ls -a'. It could either be in the default bash config, or an actual script redirecting to the new command.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I actually really like openSUSE's solution to this where egrep and fgrep are just scripts:

#!/bin/sh
exec grep -E "$@"

#!/bin/sh
exec grep -F "$@"
