Here’s a pleasantly painful trailer for a new movie from the comedian Joanna Arnow: The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. kottke.org/24/04/the-feeling-t…
in reply to kottke.org

Having slogged through the trailer, yeah, um, the brief feeling of possibly wanting to go to this film . . . has passed.

and I would say a) cute zebra mice: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbat

and b) look cuddly but are australian, would recommend reading all about them first, not sure about poison or huge jaws

Tried the spiffy Ultrawide support out, but it thinks I'm on a Steam Deck (Bazzite on a desktop) so it plays at 720p, not so spiffy anymore.

Fixed by editing the Fallout4Prefs.ini file and then write protecting it.

Not ideal, but maybe it helps someone!

A Message from the Chancellor on the Recent Student Protest. “But this recent protest is different. These students will never inspire change. Fifty years from now, we will definitely not pretend that we agreed with them the whole time.” mcsweeneys.net/articles/a-mess…
in reply to kottke.org

Did you ever see the At Berkeley movie? it was a really good series of images from a year on campus at Berkeley, the year that students occupied Wheeler Hall. We got a snippet of an admin meeting, in which the admins basically said exactly this.

'Yes, I know we occupied buildings the Free Speech Movement, which is comemorated on campus by a cafe literally called the Free Speech Movement Cafe, but kids these days are different. They don't know how to occupy a building right.'

in reply to kottke.org

realizing that this is a satirical article, no one actually is going to talk about this the way we’ve talked about past ones. More than half of the participants don’t even understand what they’re protesting.

New Hampshire residents have been taking advantage of Massachusetts business and civic resources for too long. They should pay some taxes.

Definitely Tom. And Some Do, but there is also a number of them that come down here and work on contracts rather than employees and others who do so under the table in one form or another, just like all the vehicles that are registered in NH but pretty much spend all their time down here (such as construction companies that operate in MA but their office is in NH and they store there trucks down here at construction sites).

Personally, I don't think it'll get cancelled since the Arc series has been a hit with pre-builts. Would suck though if they abandoned the line, since I have an Arc 770 lol

Nadine Smith
23 May 2024:

If you haven’t been following the “a bear or a man” thought experiment richocheting around social media, you are missing the fascinating opportunity to witness the penny drop for some men.

I watched a video of a wife asking her husband if he would rather their daughter be in the woods with a bear or a man. “Which man?””What kind of bear?” He pondered as his mind grazed and recoiled from the details of imagined dangers.

Then she asked: “How about a woman or a bear?” She scarcely had the words out of her mouth before he answered “Woman!” No questions about who she was, what circumstances. You could see the horror of realization in his eyes.

Equally revealing is the fury in some men when they discover that so many women pick the bear.

MASTODON TIP OF THE DAY: This seems to be as good a time as any to remind you that you can use "in:library" with search terms in your Mastodon search (at least, with the advanced web interface), to search for text in the Mastodon posts you have made in the past. Please see the attached image for an example:
in reply to Ryan Schultz

How about "in:my posts" or something more user friendly than the jargon word "Library"?
in reply to Colin Devroe

@cdevroe @edwiebe Yes, from:me does what the original post is about, in:library is a bit more than that.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron oh, interesting. Might be nice to add more detail about all search operators here: docs.joinmastodon.org/user/net…

(Unless there is a document already and I cannot find it.)

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @edwiebe
It has more common and general everyday meanings outside of the context of Mastodon?

Timeline, post history, seem more straight forward. No one refers to their wallet, their notebook, their in Box their out box, their posts their diary, etc… as ‘My Library’

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @edwiebe
As a Mastodon thing? No interest in Mastodon as an RSS reader / podcast player either.

I have a library of books, and DVD, and other media as well. And the public library is a couple of miles away.

I have no need or ambition for Mastodon becoming any of those.

Reddit signed a deal with Google to use its data to train LLMs. To celebrate, we made a firefox extension that lets you replace all your comments with any text of your choosing. All we ask is that you not choose something copyrighted. The New York Times is currently suing OpenAI for training ChatGPT on its copyrighted material, and we wouldn't want Reddit's uniquely valuable data to become hopelessly intermingled with that of litigious copyright-holders.

@wolfram_roesler @sinus @smartwater @lernbuddy Everything on the internet is a security risk 😉 It all depends on your threat profile. Of course, anyone can hire a dozen Nextcloud developers to provide a secure solution, but they won't be cheap. Nextcloud partners benefit from our help with early security patches, extra testing, professional support, bug fixes, etc. You will have to decide if the price outweighs the risk for yourself.

@wolfram_roesler @sinus @smartwater @lernbuddy Anyone can make Nextcloud secure given a particular threat profile, with proper administration and infrastructure considerations.

Of course, it is a bit harder at a business scale than for home users (which we try to make SUPER easy with our all-in-one Docker container). But just like a home user benefits from our help and expertise when they use the Docker AIO, a partner can benefit from our help. That gives you, as a customer, some assurance.

I've written a chunky post about my ideas and challenges I see for the design of the Liblast Framework.

The Liblast Project aims to build a framework for making FPS games and produce an FPS game called Liblast.

For all that to work, we need a lot of educated, forward-looking design decisions.

I am taking inspiration from the Quake/Source engine family, but also from Liblast legacy game and other work I've done.

Please chime in 😀
