That reminds me - we have bats nesting in one of the walls of our house. We want to move them to a better location (we want to put up a bat-house) on the outside of the wall; we don't want to harm the bats - we kinda like them being around.

If you don't want AI spying on your phone, there are options besides continually disabling it. One great one is, next time you need a new device, get one with e/OS. Android minus the spying. murena.com/america/products/smโ€ฆ

Update: See below for some very compelling critiques of e/OS.

As I've been watching some interesting farmer-owned youtoob sites, the first two chickens remind me of Ayam Cemani hens...the third could be a Rhode Island red, and the last one is a rooster, possibly a Faverolles

News just in: company's new console will be more powerful. Truly incredible scenes.

I'm begging gaming sites to hire people that understand what they're talking about.

"Even more impressive, though, is that 12 GB of RAM for the Switch 2 would mean it's more powerful than the Xbox Series S, which would be significant."

RAM amount = power now apparently.

I appreciate that @eLife decision to provide a 'partial feed' of work judged "solid" in order to get indexed was made in consultation with the community, and it serves researchers' interests to have their papers indexed. But, it does feel like likely that many will perceive this as more like traditional pre-publication peer review rather than an experiment in post-publication peer review, which is a shame.

(Edited because I think my original formulation of this post was too negative.)

Major media outlets have alluded to Luigi Mangioneโ€™s manifesto, have it in their possession, and have selectively quoted from it, but refuse to publish it in full. No surprises there.

Well, here it is, courtesy of Ken Klippenstein.

I doubt this will change anything in the short term. Nothingโ€™s really gonna change until Congress grows a pair and passes universal healthcare.

But this incident illuminates something interesting. The American healthcare industry isnโ€™t just hated by the leftโ€”itโ€™s hated by most Americans! Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh learned this the hard way.

newsweek.com/unitedhealthcare-โ€ฆ

in reply to Michelle Catherine Marcรณ

Alas, selling universal healthcare to the right is easier said than done. Right-wing politicians reflexively slap the โ€œsocialistโ€ label on it to make it toxic. Theyโ€™ll also not-so-subtly suggest that certain people donโ€™t deserve it.

But we gotta find a way. I mean, think about it. Whenโ€™s the last time an issue has united us this way? Thereโ€™s an opportunity here, and I hope there are a bunch of people smarter than me ready to seize it.

Universal healthcareโ€”letโ€™s make it happen, people!

I just wanted to read the letter from the Nobel laureates asking the U.S. Senate not to confirm RFKJr. I went through all kinds of paywall and email wall b.s. at the NYT and what I found on archive was broken, it had bits and pieces only. Finally I found the link to the PDF (static01.nyt.com/newsgraphics/โ€ฆ) and I have to say the letter is pretty underwhelming.

thanks for posting. I also looked (unsuccessfully) for the actual letter...

My #AntennaPodEcho for 2024.

Honorable mention to @grammargirl

I used to listen to the Grammar Girl Quick and Dirty Tips... podcast on Stitcher years ago, but it wasn't until recently that I added the feed to AntennaPod and started listening again.

in reply to nebunez

Welcome back! I love to hear that!

I'm actually curious how you feel about the show now versus how it was before.

I feel like it's changed a lot โ€” so much so that I've been thinking about doing a survey to see how people feel about it. But as someone who stopped and came back, I think you'd have an especially interesting perspective!

in reply to Mignon Fogarty

It has changed but only in good ways! And I didn't even really notice the changes at first.

When I started listening again it felt familiar. The core format is there, but it feels like it's matured. I especially love the interviews.

A really massive sustainabiliy win from Microsoft. Their new data center design will recycle water used for cooling servers instead of consuming fresh water. This will save 125M liters of water per year.

In combination with the push for nuclear powered data centers across big tech, this should mitigate the environmental costs of the industryโ€™s significant push into AI.

in reply to Dare Obasanjo

Another option is to just not push into AI. Imagine these improvements, but used for something more useful.
