"2024 BX1, previously known under its temporary designation Sar2736, was a 44 centimetre-sized (17 inches) asteroid or meteoroid that entered Earth's atmosphere on 21 January 2024 00:33 UTC and disintegrated as a meteor over Berlin. The recovered fragments are known as the Ribbeck meteorite."

For Those Who Think I'm 'Just Paranoid' About Cell Phones & Risks

If a foreign power can hack your phone, I am sure criminals and our domestic law enforcement and government agencies can do so even easier and not get caught. Cell Phones remain a clear and present danger for identity theft, privacy theft etc.

There are different kinds of paranoia, everyone has some level of it in their nature. Dismissing reality is also a danger. I have survived when many friends and family members have not, because I remain alert and observant and cautious. Being alive and beating the odds so far means I have about the right level of paranoia on many many things.

"Having some understanding of how airlines work has served me in good stead, but the first step is in learning to see collective systems as, well, collective systems. I'm part of it as a passenger, but so are the staff, whose behavior and flexibility within the system is likely even more constrained since their livelihood depends on it. I've only witnessed a "Do you know who I am?"-style meltdown at a gate a couple of times. They're rare because most adult humans, even when they're upset, do understand that their needs or desires don't outweigh those of a passenger jet full of people. It's the same idea as "You're not stuck in traffic, you are the traffic." We can consciously sidestep the narrative solipsism of thinking we must be the hero of the story (or that anyone is) and the attendant fallacy that the systems are there to serve us individually or specifically, rather than as part of a collective."

A few years ago I found out about a programming language written in #Gaeilge (the Irish language) called Setanta. I tinkered a little with it then but hit some road blocks and it seemed to have been left unsupported.

The creator Eoin Davey developed it when he was a teenager, later honed while studying computer science at NUI Maynooth in 2016.

Today I learned that it is still updated and there are some pretty great tutorials to have some fun with an IDE.

This can be easily done in Lisp and it would naturally look kind of like Irish because of the syntax, e.g. (is-ionann X agus Y) or (an-bhfuil X níos-mó-ná Y).
in reply to Yoel Matveyev

@yoel yes for sure but that also makes it a translation exercise from English to Irish, beginning with English-led (colonial) linguistic forms and traditions. There are many concepts in Irish (and every language) that don't easily translate into other languages so having a programming language built to a specific spoken language potentially opens the door to programming with these concepts.

A couple of the articles linked in the replies here write about this specifically, and better than I can.

Footage shows NY officers beating prisoner before death

Newly released bodycam footage appears to show New York corrections officers fatally beating a handcuffed inmate who died the following morning. The inmate, 43-year-old Robert Brooks, was pronounced dead on 10 December, the day after the incident took place at the Marcy Correctional Facility in upstate New York.

Following an internal review, New York Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the firing of the 13 officers and a prison nurse who were involved in the assault. The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James has opened an investigation into Brooks' death, and the union that represents state prison workers called the video "incomprehensible".

The Curious Case of Quentell

By Martijn Faassen • 2024-12-27

I hang out on Mastodon quite a bit. 1 One of the most consistently engaging people in the Mastodon fediverse is @futurebird@sauropods.win. Besides pro-ant propaganda, you get thoughts about teaching and mathematics, micro-science fiction, her cat Pica (often wronged, always right), and much more. Highly recommended.

She tooted:

The scientific illustrator, Quentell came to the US after WWII ...

Who is Quentell, I wondered?

...I did enjoy this weird journey discovering a man who did not exist. It's fascinating to consider how in an information society a mythical figure such as Jung-Koch Quentell can be created by accident.

It demonstrates how easy it is to casually pollute our information landscape.

in reply to Muse

WOW!!!! Fascinating and Fucking Terrifying!!

...boils down to this I think:
"The internet is truly in for a wild ride, and I don't think most people see this coming."

I just spoke to the warehouse. In an effort to ship as many orders as possible before the holidays, they used all available packaging. They now have new boxes and future orders will be packaged to a better standard. I am sorry for the subpar experience. I hope the toy has arrived safely.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

All good, man. Appreciate the reply. It totally made it safely and intact so that’s what matters. A small heads up in the shipping notification or something would’ve sufficed. No need to apologize and I’m glad they’re finally available here in the US!
