it's sad that the #RustConf 2023 talks aren't uploaded yet
according to someone involved with the project, it's due to a lack of resources, and loss of relevant staff
it's a shame, i'd love to see what the talks were about

@ephemeral
I bought a FairPhone 3 with /e/OS installed.
very happy. there were some issues with my banking app but that was resolved in a year or two as I (and some others) pressed a little.
their App Lounge is perfect - it blends transparently F-droid repos with anonymous google play in single search.
last update of the system is dated january 9 2024.
i think buying a fairphone with e/os is great combo.

I think some of the strange fungus from my old soviet lenses has escaped and set up shop between my window panes. It's quite beautiful when the light catches it, it looks like frost.
Ooh, nice to hear @caseynewton and Kevin Roose talk about media co-ops like Defector on Hard Fork: nytimes.com/2024/01/26/podcast…
But I disagree that public funding isn't necessary. The market is inadequate for a healthy news ecosystem. Always has been.
More research on co-op news: ntnsndr.in/StakeholderNews
@GuerillaOntologist well, the initial funders didn't exactly bail—the Sun got a huge grant from a doomed crypto startup and were wise enough to take it in dollars:) To your earlier points! But yes, it is a powerful example of what could be possible if co-op models had more access to significant early stage capital.
With RMEOC, the @coloradosun recently shifted to a more resilient worker control model—legally a nonprofit, but worker self-directed. Huge success story.

Aufgrund deines Kommentars habe ich jetzt mal den Browsercache gelöscht und den Browser neu gestartet. Jetzt funktioniert es. Seltsam.
yesterday I wrote a weekly note, and today it lives on my website which is updated with new homegrown "software" (more like a hacky php smol-script, always under construction) and some design improvements. there's also recent music and some other hidden gems.
i'm tiny little bit proud and very excited - finally a way forward for self-publishing and self-archive, including in realm of #BeYourOwnPlatform
maybe soon also self-hosting from home (instead of from a VPS)?
Looking back, it was so very fortunate we adopted the four girl ratties from the shelter the summer before the pandemic. 🐀🐁🐀🐁💕 They had a rockstar life, wrecking their hotel every night, eating lavishly, and partying till dawn. We had so much fun! 😆🥰❤️

Fascinating article about the Australian accent(s).
This rhetorical question in the article cracks me up: Does "France" rhyme with "pants" or "aunts"? It doesn't even occur to the journalist that "pants" and "aunts" might be pronounced the same way, and I have heard young Australians using the Western US pronounciation of "aunts" as rhyming with "pants".
Having anything but a clearly Australian accent is a liability in this country, and makes it hard to find employment. More so than in some countries.

ALL domesticated animals can prove dangerous to the ecosystem when they go feral. The animals that have wreaked the most damage, including bringing other species to extinction, are the rat, the cat, and the dog. I have all of my pets neutered. For my cats I also keep them indoors and provide an enclosed cat run, so they can't eat the local fauna. Even so, they end up catching the odd frog or mouse who gets into their enclosure. Neutering also provides many health benefits such as a calmer animal who is less likely to suffer from various genital cancers.

Cats have a bad reputation as wildlife killers (deservedly so). But dogs aren’t off the hook: new research shows domestic dogs have contributed to the extinction of at least 11 species. The Conversation
