Linux continues to be above 4% on the desktop gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/linu…

#Linux

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I know that this year I had went to my Linux box as my virtually only desktop.

My laptop I take to game will probably get swapped over as I got it in 2018. With some dork ups (Like my Diablo, SC2, and WoW not working right, when it had been) I've not had to do anything to game on my windows box (which is also the older, not upgraded machine)

I imagine many people feel the same way. I used to use my linux box for productivity and exploration, and win for gaming. Not so much nw

Of all the projects Neal Gompa is involved in, the one that always makes me chuckle is Lugaru, yes that game about kung-fu rabbits

Traditional Japanese diet associated with less brain shrinkage in women compared to western diet, says research

"The typical Japanese diet is characterised by foods such as rice, fish and shellfish, and fruits (especially citrus fruits). But what makes this diet unique are traditional Japanese foods such as miso (fermented soybean paste), seaweed, pickles, green tea, soybeans, soybeans sprouts and mushrooms (such as shiitake). Notably, this diet is also characterised by low intake of red meat and coffee."

Ran an insect blacklight during the totality, with a control run the evening before. Got a ton of insects during both, but very different species. Fascinating. More later.

Poder digital. Estado del poder 2023

Las grandes empresas tecnológicas han concentrado un enorme poder económico con la complicidad de los Estados, lo que ha redundado en una mayor vigilancia, una espiral de desinformación y el debilitamiento de los derechos de los trabajadores.

The Vatican has just reaffirmed its hostility toward so-called "gender ideology." I recently wrote in the magazine of the pope's Jesuit order that this posture is a dangerous failure of imagination: americamagazine.org/faith/2023…
in reply to hazelnot

@hazelnot No, not really. The pope is one bishop among others (with an historically important seat). That office helps serve the purpose of unity. But subsidiarity is also a vitally important part of how the church works: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidia…
in reply to Nathan Schneider

huh fair

I live in a majority Orthodox country and here it's basically just, the patriarch is the big boss for all the priests in the country and all the power is centralised in his hands

He's also ultra-corrupt, was an informer of the Securitate and runs multiple companies through church middlemen (and can and does easily dismiss and/or blacklist anyone who goes against him)

It’s Eclipse Day! Are you doing anything for the eclipse? Anyone got any crazy camera/telescope setups? Do you think Instagram is going to crash this afternoon? kottke.org/24/04/its-eclipse-d…
in reply to kottke.org

got a cheap lil filter film, we’ll see! Clear skies in Vermont thankfully

We traveled to Toledo, Ohio last night for today’s #eclipse. The journey from here depends on the clouds.

Wishing everyone clear skies & great viewing. Have fun & make sure to protect your eyes. science.nasa.gov/eclipses

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Also in Ohio looking at (conflicting) cloud cover forecasts this morning and trying to figure out where to go. #eclipse
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

We landed in Napoleon, Ohio - the home of the Campbell’s Soup factory - for today’s total #eclipse.

The view was spectacular.

How did your experiences go? /2

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Shhh!!! 🤫 Campbell's should be in Camden, NJ. Been there since 1869 — part of the Garden State legacy. northjersey.com/story/entertai… 😊
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

We had a spectacular eclipse. Unfortunately, we’re still stuck in traffic in Maine. Still worth it.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I watched the NASA feed as I'm a few thousand miles away. It was fun to join in at each site as the path moved. I've seen a partial, but hoping to get to Spain in 2026 for a total!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I briefly looked out the window, saw the dense cloud - and since it would only reach ~20% coverage in Seattle anyway, I vicariously followed everyone's reactions on here instead!

(I've seen a total solar eclipse - and a ~92% one - before, so I didn't feel completely left out...)

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

My wife and I were able to experience totality from our backyard. Even though I've heard and read a lot about how overwhelming a total eclipse can be, I was completely unprepared for how astonishingly beautiful and moving it was. Words or pictures truly cannot do it justice. Feeling so lucky today. Hope your experience was equally as awesome!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Wife & I planned to be on the centerline, east of Del Rio, TX. The clouds were thick and visibility poor. Lt rain as we approached Del Rio so we decided to blow off the centerline and view from Del Rio. We didn’t see the sun until it briefly appeared at ~25% obscured. Totality was mostly obscured by clouds, no corona seen due to cirrus clouds. After totality clouds thinned noticeably. This was my 3rd total and didn’t come close to the awesomeness of the first two.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Our travel plans ended up cancelled, but we got a fun view of the partial from the back yard! (We put together a solar filter for my daughter's telescope.)

Check out the Manjaro Linux lead talk about the Orange Pi NEO gaming handheld gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/chec…

#OrangePiNEO #Linux #HandheldGaming

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Incredibly bad talk. The text barely makes sense at many points, the speaker is barely able to read it out loud, and keeps messing up. Feels like a complete waste to have an expert and force them to read a couple of poorly translated marketing statements.

The design of this is clearly heavily inspired by the Steam Deck. 16:10 screen, two touchpads and a Linux OS, so it must ship Proton to be of any use. Valve should really hurry up and release a Steam OS distro.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

The details in the hardware look nice, like Hall Effect joysticks. But my faith in the Manjaro devs is limited, and Orange Pi doesn't have a huge reputation yet (no complaints with my Zero 3 yet).

Interested to see how this plays out.
