One of those exceedingly rare cases where an organization that I support turns out to be better than I thought it to be, rather than the opposite. Good on Flickr. This is an amazing step toward long-term digital preservation.

A new view of an old favorite!

This sparkling new image depicts a small section of the Carina Nebula, one of Hubble’s most-imaged objects. It’s about 7,500 light-years away, and busy with cosmic activity – including star birth and death!

iirc, it is also where the aliens came from in Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End

The Carina Nebula is included in the Caldwell Catalog, published in December 1995 – 27 years ago this month!

"The removal of shows from HBO Max means WB Discovery is able to save money in residuals paid to cast and crews of productions, on top of the money saved by not continuing with the shows at all." variety.com/2022/tv/news/westw…
in reply to kottke.org

fuck this shit. Actually The Nevers was one pleasantly watchable series on the hbo max crap. Cancelled. Put next to Firefly I guess.

Another very good incentive to the people to actually download stuff instead of paying for it on some corporate-shark site which may pull it anytime. Stupid, stupid.

in reply to kottke.org

I’m still mad they removed Amsterdam, a delightful Spanish language show set in Mexico City. And there’s no way to watch the shows when they’re gone.

So weird that HBO Max is removing shows (like Westworld?!) to, uh, "make room" for other things? It's a digital service – it has infinite room? vulture.com/article/hbo-max-re…

WBD is determined to see a net profit so it can pay the $51 b debt it incurred in the purchase.

Destroy the company in order to save it. Or at least save Zaslav

sadly there are not infinite $ to afford both executive bonuses and royalties to the people involved with those shows. 😀

I kinda want to do this but with Jocko. Retired Navy SEAL that is just beyond intense and always brings things back to war, combat, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

I am a war vet over here in the us of a and these guys have been in my sphere or media consumption for years. It's so crazy for me to realize that more people know about them. I know it's because they've been on JRE. But not everyone is gonna go, "oh I want to hear what it was like in the Al Anbar province in 06-08!" and slap on an interview with a "red pilled hippie" and a guy that could knock out a bear.

idk I've never watched joe Rogan but switching to Linux is like doin weed for the first time, it's crazy.

Farewell to the LRV 👋

Near the end of their last EVA, #Apollo17 astronauts Cernan and Schmitt parked the rover with its camera pointed at the LM to record its launch from the Moon. Over 3 days, they had completed 22 hours of EVAs—the most of all the Apollo missions. #Apollo50th

As part of the #Apollo17 Lunar Seismic Profiling Experiment, Harrison Schmitt and Gene Cernan pulled the pins on 8 explosive charges (on the right in the 📷) left at 8 sites, activating timers that would allow them to be exploded roughly 90 hours later. #Apollo50th

Seismometers were deployed during each of the Apollo missions that reached the lunar surface and for decades have been used to investigate the internal structure of the Moon.

One of the types of moonquakes detected, originating at moderately shallow depths of 20-30 km, can register up to a startling 5.5 on the Richter scale and can last for over 10 minutes!

The heart of SWOT!

A new Earth-observing satellite will survey water on more than 90% of Earth’s surface and see our planet's water in higher definition than ever before. An instrument called the Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn) is making it possible: go.nasa.gov/3FgGMzQ
#NASAJPL

KaRIn has been designed to capture very precise measurements of the height of water in Earth’s freshwater bodies and the ocean. And unlike other satellites, it can take measurements regardless of cloud cover or time of day.

SWOT is set to launch on Dec. 15. #TrackingWorldWater
