Romeo Rucha - Stay Calm (Jan 2023)

cerebral, irreverent, funky, and guaranteed to crack a few smiles

Imagine Autotune the News, Blue Man Group and Emergency Broadcast Network are fighting in a smallish box. Heaps of creative shifted, re-timed and glitched samples of spoken word and catchy underlying beats and sounds.

I don't want this played at my funeral because I won't hear it. Play it NOW!

show @romeorucha some fedi love

"How wonderful it is that no one has to wait, but we can start right now to gradually change the world!

How wonderful it is that everyone, great and small, can immediately help bring about justice by giving of themselves!”

The first exoplanet image was taken from 230 light-years away. Because 2M1207 b orbits a brown dwarf at a great distance, it was possible to separate the light from planet and (failed) star. @NASAHubble took a later look and that science informed a planet illustration.
#NASAExoplanets

Exoplanets are far away and hard to see. They are often obscured by the much brighter light of their stars, so capturing their images is hard, but not impossible. The first exoplanet image, by @ESO, was obtained in 2004. go.nasa.gov/40HwVNn

I need that "thinking dude" meme gif to put here. (but I'm afraid google AI will give me something else)

We're getting unprecedented and groundbreaking science from @NASAWebb, but it hasn't seen exoplanet surfaces. It did capture four views in different bands of infrared of an exoplanet last year. 👀

My 6 year old found the glove of a friend and he took it home. I felt challenged and made a quick #crochet #repair on the worn out glove. Crochet is very flexible, you can add stitches, you can skip them, without a great effort. It's quite organic. I hope his friend will like it.

ChatGPT article in vice

.@irwindev posted this after @ashedryden and I ended up reading it. The article succinct and short, IMO. My takeaway quotes are:

"Saying, as the OpenAI CEO does, that we are all 'stochastic parrots' like large language models, statistical generators of learned patterns that express nothing deeper, is a form of nihilism"

"Transformer models and diffusion models are not creative but carceral - they and other forms of AI imprison our ability to imagine real alternatives"

I just saw that Meet.coop is shutting down its service: opencollective.com/meet-coop/u… This is a shame. I applaud them for their efforts.

Social.coop is a member. I suspect we'll probably be okay just using Jitsi via our May First membership.

But still, the important thing: Thank you, Meet.coop folks, for all you've done.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

There is discussion about possible scenarios in which the service might continue. For example, Social.coop could take over the basic elements, perhaps in collaboration with other co-ops. I find BigBlueButton very useful. I prefer it to zoom.
in reply to bhaugen

@Matt_Noyes @bhaugen is there anything that BBB does that Jitsi can't be made to do? The notes system comes to mind, but that could be fixed with an etherpad.
in reply to bhaugen

@bhaugen @Matt_Noyes Yep, that's what I had in mind, since #Socialcoop is already a @mayfirst member. One thing I appreciate, too, is the intentional low-bandwidth setting to reduce carbon footprint. Also, the MF instance has a rad custom tool for supporting multilingual interpretation.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Has Huddle01 been explored? They are building a web3 decentralized real-time communication infrastructure.

It has been awhile since we seriously explored their service for our projects. Having a top notch mobile experience was an important consideration which, at that time, they were not able to deliver.

What if some of the people are adults and some are kids? Large pizzas or Medium? No more questions! Just use the formula, and round up to the nearest pizza. It works. Your quality of life will improve.

suspect the formula given for slices of pizza is a bit miserly. Anyway, it doesn’t include relevant constants.

X * Pi + X ÷ e

if you want to be a bit more miserly, divide by Pi instead of e
