BEWARE of a most likely MALICIOUS Liblast "fork":

codeberg.org/pigeon54353/Libre…

This person has faked "evidence" to support a ridiculous claim about Liblast (which is verifiably false).

The person has also created fake issue tickets and tried to pull developer's attention to a supposed vulnerability (which makes no sense either and had no substance provided).

Don't let this person deceive you. We don't know what their agenda is yet, but they are certainly malicious.

Doesn't seem to be Godot drama, just someone on the internet being a dick.

So, SciHub and other "shadow libraries" may be hurting the development of open access business models? arxiv.org/abs/2309.12349
in reply to Nathan Schneider

From the abstract:

> without proposing a credible and sustainable alternative model for the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

What makes SciHub not a credible and sustainable alternative?

in reply to madhadron

@madhadron I think because it does not fund the costs of editorial and production labor.

Which is not to say that corporate publishing is any better. But there are lots of OA journals hosted and funded by universities, and it would be nice if they got some incentive in comparison to paywalled journals.

Who wants to convert Bandcamp to a co-op?

“Epic will also sell Bandcamp, a music distribution platform Epic acquired in March 2022, Sweeney wrote.”

Ethiopian Tigst Assefa is the new women's marathon record-holder: 2:11:53. The men's record in 1965 was 2:12, but the women are getting faster quicker. Since '65: men are 11min faster while women are an hour faster. (And 5min vs 9min since '98.) npr.org/2023/09/24/1201396142/…

For kitchen scientists.

All fermentation practices are different, we don't all use the same jars, we don't all ferment the same quantities, and some even explore bacteria or mycelium cultures from the angle of art, design or technological development.

That's why we've also put the fermenter technology into a bigger box, allowing for more advanced practice. We call it the Domingo Fermenter Lab.

Four shots from Asagaya (阿佐ヶ谷) in western Tokyo. This area boosts quite a few theater spaces, and many pubs and eateries.

The surprisingly radical roots of Renaissance Fairs.

Every year, the roughly 200 Renaissance fairs and festivals held across the United States and abroad attract several million visitors. United by their raucous entertainment, elaborate costumes and setting in the distant past, these outdoor events boast a surprising backstory.

in reply to Muse

I like the paintings and the music of the Renaissance era. It's always fun dressing up! I dislike playing at being kings, queens, lords and ladies.

These days I would probably play the fellow from Monty Python and the Holy Grail who said, “Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.”

in reply to Muse

Mais certainment, Hastings. Together, we shall emply the little grey cells and solve this mystery!

Waaaah! I have been asked to speak at a conference. I've thoroughly rewritten the speech umpteen times. AND NOW I HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO PACK! It has been such a long time since I have travelled!

(even mimes end up using real bags!)

in reply to Muse

@Kenny Chaffin Thank you! It was a little wobbly because no one at the venue understood their own technology in order to get things running smoothly. But, as you said--it was fine!

Just finished Fionna & Cake, the new Adventure Time series on Max.

I just love how creative, fun, weird & interesting this whole universe is & how it explores themes with interesting characters we don’t usually get to see on tv.

Any other fans out there?

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

haven’t started Fiona & Cake yet, but completed the original series last year as well as the HBO content.

Love the weirdness.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

It's great! It's like the creators whipped up a whole new flavor of Adventure-Time-ness using lore deep cuts and a higher age rating

Carbon-rich peatlands continue to be cleared and drained in an Indonesian protected wildlife reserve known as the “orangutan capital of the world,” with 26 kilometers (16 miles) of new canals dug so far in 2023, up from 9 km (5.6 mi) in 2022, according to an investigation by the advocacy group Rainforest Action Network (RAN).
