🥾 Did you know that astronauts hike as part of their training? Hiking has been an element of astronaut survival training since the early 1960s and was part of geological training in the Apollo years. Enjoy these trekking images of @NASA_Astronauts for #NationalHikingDay #NASAhistory

🌱 My Neighbor Mastodon

Just want to say thanks for the 15K followers. It's amazing how calming it can be for me as an artist to know that my biggest audience is on the Fediverse right now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who contributed to this.

LIVE NOW: Media teleconference on the James Webb Space Telescope's early science results, including these latest findings. ⬇️ Hear from our experts: youtu.be/eocPdOdGK5g #JamesWebb

Hello new people! 👋

I run a human-curated directory of interesting accounts to follow on here:

➡️ fedi.directory

Do you have an account that posts a lot about a particular topic? Would you like to be listed in the directory?

If so, @ me or send me a DM and let me know!

(The site only went live a few days ago so some topics are less populated than others, but this is why I am working on expanding it!)

Boosts appreciated :blobcat:

Regarding the Master Rolodex idea you are implementing: I would like to be listed (this account obviously) at the "dogs" section for starters but your DM seemed to be locked. Here is the category I would like to be listed for starters fedi.directory/tag/dogs/

great initiative, thank you!

I post about politics and specifically international relations/foreign policy/diplomacy, especially European. I also often write about Scotland and the UK.

"This is a whole new chapter in astronomy." Webb researchers found 2 early galaxies, one of which may contain the most distant starlight ever seen. These 2 unexpectedly bright galaxies could fundamentally alter what we know about the very first stars: go.nasa.gov/3XdhoDa #JamesWebb
in reply to NASA

Ah, yes, the eyes at the belly of the universe. I am loving the results of the JWST so very much.

PS -- No one ever answered me about why so many astronauts have such square jawlines. Ed Harris or John Travolta could play most of them, I think. 😎

While the algorithms of other social media platforms push users to see feeds that push them deeper in their own bubble, mastodon users are self-herding within servers that show local feeds (as one option). #MedTwitter existed across the entire platform. #MedMastodon is over 70% happening within med-mastodon.com

Community of interest or more segregated from other audiences?

in reply to Ken Deutsch

I think it depends on the use cases for #MedMastodon. IMO communication among peers can be done by looking at the local timeline and ensuring peers outside the instance are being followed. Hashtags (on the other hand) are good for allowing folks across multiple instances to participate even if they follow noone. I think the size of the fediverse can make hashtags not good for ongoing discussions as thread of conversation become lost in folks "broadcasting".

Excelente artículo, la investigación periodística aquí es mucho mejor que todo lo que han sacado los grandes medios "impresos" sobre mastodon.

Look, I tried to come up with something better but it is what it says on the tin. It's a place to find code you can use/modify/adapt to your own situations.

I'm gonna test Microsoft flight simulator 2020 using game pass streaming to the deck later. I found it almost unplayable on the Xbox because the controls were just too course, I'm curious to see if the deck does better.

I'll report my findings.

Bette Midler's "From A Distance" comes to mind. So beautiful from afar, so polluted from within.

I can't believe I spent the time to throw this together: hastwitterfiledforchapter11yet… 🤣 I threw my back out tonight, so I was stuck on the couch and went, "If I don't hurry up and make the page, the answer will be 'yes' before I get to it."

On a side note: I really like the Atkinson hyperlegible font I used there, although it's not much text. I've had it bookmarked for over a year, but hadn't had a use case for it. (brailleinstitute.org/freefont)

2023 Is The Year Of Linux Wayland Gaming! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/yXYWCUWDqss
in reply to Brodie Robertson

as far as I know, one of wayland's selling points is VSync all the time, therefore a reduced power consumption in some cases and so on the speech goes. If players didn't want that from the beginning, also we know that the wayland security model breaks important stuff in the linux desktop, such as severely limiting accessibility untill it almost becomes unusable(can't say much more because of the char limit), then what is wayland good for? I'm running gnome and plasma with wayland atm, for some reason my computer indeed feels faster, however I'm still wondering to this day, will the wayland transition be a good thing in the end? Imho, we just replaced a bad thing with another, a big distributed sweet of components communicating with rpc and sockets with a monolithic program that does many things and every such program has to implement most of the same things over and over, ipc hell now gets replaced with wlroots or whatever not providing enough functionality, etc.
