I just don't like the way Fox announcers have chosen to pronounce "Qatar", even after reading this article. It's not that hard to get close to the actual pronunciation w/o completely Alex Trebeking it. nytimes.com/interactive/2022/1…
in reply to kottke.org

If it makes you feel any better, it takes a few weeks when learning Arabic to be able to pronounce the initial letter qaf.
in reply to kottke.org

The article implies (though doesn't explicitly say) that Fox went that way to avoid "KUH-ter", which is indicated to be worse than "kuh-TAHR"

Living in deer tick country in the US, am happy to see this Lyme vaccine go into Phase III trial! Hopefully will participate. aamc.org/news-insights/lyme-di…
in reply to Emily

I don't know if its worth your time to watch it. Maybe it would be nice to watch with some folks who are less aware of lyme. The filmmakers intend for it to serve as a lightning rod for continued activism around pushing for policy change to address lyme and I think that's great. So mostly I saw an opportunity to spread the word a little via your toot. Perhaps you will get all you need from reading this review:

3brothersfilm.com/blog/2022/5/…

(and if that entices you then give it watch 😛 )

in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan Thank you that is a really good review (I think, but since I haven't seen the film.) Around here I cannot imagine anyone who isn't familiar with Lyme! What is interesting (I had considered for a moment, writing a book about tick-borne diseases not just Lyme) was that it isn't just US, Europe too has an apparently growing Lyme problem (the vax is French I think.) link.springer.com/article/10.1…

Where did our Moon come from? Over the years, there have been several theories, but the one most scientists agree on is a collision theory. It’s likely that a Mars-sized object smashed into the Earth, creating what we now see in the sky: go.nasa.gov/3uTkYpf
#NASA
#NASA
in reply to NASA

If the moon is made of early Earth's crust does that mean the substance of the Moon will have clues about how Earth formed? Or has Moon changed too much since then? It doesn't have tectonic dynamics at work tho.
in reply to NASA

Nice visual. It helped me understand how this theory is even possible. Early Earth, warm and soft, pliable upon impact from a Mars sized planet.

In 2020 and 2021, global atmospheric concentrations of methane – a potent greenhouse gas – surged in record growth since measurements began ~40 years ago.

This video shows global methane emissions from wetlands since 1980. Wetlands are one of the largest single methane sources.
#NASAEarth

Wetlands store massive quantities of carbon in soils. But as the climate gets warmer or wetter, microbes in the wetlands start releasing more methane into the atmosphere.

Wow. OverclockersUK admitted to overselling on their AMD 7900 GPU stock.

So no Radeon 7900 XTX for me this year, because I chose their store and they showed it clearly in stock even during taking payment details, when it wasn't.

in reply to Wyatt

@Wyatt Clearly under prepared, and likely their system simply isn't smart enough to know when it's out of stock to stop people buying something like this

either way, it's terrible and means i won't see the GPU this year, so refund requested and won't use them again

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

smart decision. Rational mindset. I hope this hurts them, but that they learn and can recover. Unless this has happened numerous times. Then screw them, and their mum.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I'm going for a full refund on this.

If I'm putting my payment details in, with the item in my basket and you tell me a day later it was over-sold, that's just not something I'm going to support, that's bad business.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

are they refusing to automatically refund you? If so, they’re on record as having done this. I’d file a chargeback.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Sloppy inventory and sloppy accounting are two of the quickest ways to destroy my faith in a business.
