The air in Salt Lake City, Utah is often among the most polluted in the U.S.

Snow cover increases the chance of temperature inversions – when warm air acts like a lid, trapping pollutants near the surface, new research finds. go.nasa.gov/3xqvkOA

Little story: Drove down from Sun Valley (five hours) to spend night before flight next day. Washed all the road grime off my car before going to the airport. When I got back nine days later, hardly recognized my little orange Honda car. It was covered in grime from winter inversion. Went to car wash and washed the car again.

The Salt Lake City area was covered in snow on Feb. 2, 2023, when @nasa’s Aqua satellite took this image.

At the time, @EPA data showed the air quality was above 100 on the air quality index, making it unhealthy for sensitive groups.

“We find that open source code containing swearwords exhibit significantly better code quality than those not containing swearwords under several statistical tests. We hypothesise that the use of swearwords constitutes an indicator of a profound emotional involvement of the programmer with the code and its inherent complexities, thus yielding better code based on a thorough, critical, and dialectic code analysis process.”

Ugh, the NY Times' dismissal of yesterday's open letter about their coverage of trans people as "advocacy" is insulting, especially since the letter called them out for uncritically using unacknowledged anti-trans activists as sources. assignedmedia.org/breaking-new…
in reply to kottke.org

It became apparent when Margaret Sullivan was Public Editor of the NY Times that the editors and journalists of the times are incapable of recognizing any error or fault of their own.

When there is a problem in their reporting, the problem is ALWAYS that the reader did not read the report right or did not understand the report. The problem is NEVER with the editors or journalists.

That attitude is a tremendous barrier to learning, a barrier the Times has zero interest in removing.

Improving solar cell efficiency would be a massive benefit to come from the Mars Program.

Right now, solar cells only react to one wavelength of light with the rest of the spectrum going to waste. Reacting to a 2nd wavelength would DOUBLE efficiency (producing nearly twice as much electricity.) Imagine a solar cell that reacts to the 7 primaries (ROYGBIV)? Solar cars that never need plugging in! 😵

Today's rocket launches are part of an effort to study Earth's mesosphere, the layer of the atmosphere about 31 to 53 miles (50-85km) in altitude. 🚀☁️
