Would you prefer a 4-day workweek?

Last year, 61 companies in UK tested a 4-day week with 20% fewer hours. Results:

65% fewer sick days taken & 57% drop in departures to competitors.

39% of employees had less #stress; 71% had less #burnout.

Revenues rose 1.4% on average.

“Many questioned whether we would see an increase in productivity to offset the reduction in working time – but this is exactly what we found,” a study team member said.

It's been over two years(!) since the last release of the #IOR and #mdtest #HPC I/O benchmarks, so we just cut a candidate for 4.0.0 based on the version used for the #SC22 #IO500 here: github.com/hpc/ior/releases/ta…

PLEASE kick the tires since there have been huge changes since 3.3.0 came out.

Something that is bringing me joy this week: creating a style kit for my research group so students can feel connected to our team while presenting our work. We now have official lab fonts, a color palette, and logo. I’m working on a poster template, too. It’s the little things #HigherEd #SciComm

Food waste is responsible for at least *6%* of global greenhouse gas emissions.

We can change that. Right now.

That's what my unboxing was like 😄 except mine had a pinch closer so I could reuse it.

@Bob Lai I love how colourful the Australian used to be. In the time I have been here we have been losing much of that language to what kids see on TV from the US.

Something weird has gone on with how the-federation.info counts Misskey.

According to them, Misskey now has 475439.5 users. That's right, that includes .5 users.

If this were true, Misskey would be one of the most popular Fediverse services.

Either way, this confirms that these stats sites haven't been getting Misskey user counts right for a long, long time.

in reply to Chris Trottier

I'm looking at the list of top Misskey servers on that page. One of the top ones, bz.pawdev.me, reports 101,221 users through the /api/v1/instance API endpoint but only 42 users through the NodeInfo endpoint. Something is off.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron That’s a Calckey instance! Hey @cleo, what do you make of tabulation of users on the-federation.info? It says you have 101,221 users.

in reply to Seb

@Seb_ If you tell it that it's wrong it will actually agree with you, it seems like they've done some tweaking likely due to all the press big mistakes have been getting
@Seb

yep. I still find it funny that it will agree that 2+8=10. But then again, it is a language model not a math model.

My neurons are mumbling with skepticism - they are whispering "inverse square", but them again I'm really rusty on my physics and Claude Shannon information theory.

It's feasible, from my limited understanding. Also, they aren't claiming gigabit bandwidth for free. 26 baud up to 7 meters illustrates a low-energy signal barely above the noise.

As a winter storm bears down on the US, that has us thinking of weather on other worlds. Winds on HD 189733 b blow at 5,400 mph (2 km/s). That would send silicates in the atmosphere (glass!) flying sideways. Dayside temps are 2,000 degrees F/1,090 C. go.nasa.gov/3KsS3RG

Also consider the emissions reductions from less commuting and smaller offices caused by people working remotely, or watching videos online rather than physically manufacturing and transporting media, or emails rather than paper mail etc. etc. Looking only at the emissions of a particular technology without including the emissions offset by that technology is somewhat misleading.
