Congratulations to @cplong who has been named provost and senior vice president at University of Oregon! https://around.uoregon.edu/content/chris-long-named-uo-provost-and-senior-vice-president

Chris was my favorite dean at MSU. He is thoughtful, fair, and honest. UO chose an amazing new provost!

Challenges in Academia

A pointed article about what is going wrong, in part, with academia.

“The growth of managerial and administrative grades responsible more and more for controlling academics rather than supporting them is one of the most important trends in the modern university. That structure emits a constant white noise and static of demands that don’t seem connected to lecturers’ training or aims”

The future is here and it is fucking atrocious:

"In response to a grad student worker strike, the school recommends that staff utilize generative AI tools “to give feedback or facilitate ‘discussion’ on readings or assignments.”"

Nice case study of Kyushu Institute of Technology's, in partnership with other Japanese research institutions, use of #NextCloud for their data analytics and management.

Fantastic investment by the Academic eXchange for Information Environment and Strategy and the broader Japanese #HigherEd community to create the #OpenSource Technology Group.

Obviously I think their mission and work are applicable to other universities, systems, and consortia, but can anyone tell me why wouldn't other institutions want to invest similarly?

(Especially that last part on the slide?)

Last day of #AXIES2023 and starting up with, "Utilizing #OpenSource software in LearningAnalytics," from the Open Source technology committee.

I've seen several @sakailms presentations, posters, and vendors. Also there's a nice bit of @moodle love here too!

If you strip away the noise, the Republican takeover of formerly progressive New College boils down to:

1. Paying themselves excessively high salaries from public money.

2. Purging people who might criticize them.

3. Giving campus restaurant and other business contracts to their friends.

4. Lowering academic standards so they can attract tuition payments from students too gullible to notice they’re just marks for a grift.

Texas state Sen. Creighton has filed a bill to prohibit all public colleges and universities in Texas from granting tenure.

If SB 18 passed, it would affect employees who start after Sept. 1, 2023. The bill is one of Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s top priorities.

Something that is bringing me joy this week: creating a style kit for my research group so students can feel connected to our team while presenting our work. We now have official lab fonts, a color palette, and logo. I’m working on a poster template, too. It’s the little things #HigherEd #SciComm
