Twelve years ago a mass movement shaped by the ideas and practices of anarchism erupted out of New York City's Zuccotti Park. Taking inspiration from the Arab Spring, the Green Wave of Iran, and the Indignados Movement of Spain, participants in Occupy Wall Street boldly experimented with participatory democracy and mutual aid in public spaces.

Next week we're excited to host Marisa Holmes, one of the originators of Occupy Wall Street, for a conversation about her new book on the movement, "Organizing Occupy Wall Street: This is Just Practice." She'll be joined by author and media studies scholar @ntnsndr for a lively discussion of Occupy's experimental structure and the lessons we can learn looking back on its successes and failures.

Register for free and grab the book at firestorm.coop/events/3097-mar…. Not sure if you can make the event? Sign up anyway and you'll receive a link to the recorded conversation when we post it!

Three Trapped Tigers farewell show 😭😭😭

But other than that sad fact, solid lineup, just bought a ticket. The lineup so far is more how it used to be, before it became more "metal" over the last 2 or 3 years.

@Gargron yes, first announcement this morning! Plenty more still to come though (e.g. no headliners announced yet).

Next year will be my third year in a row. I try to keep the #ArcTanGent hashtag alive but to be fair the connectivity there is rather lacking.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Haha, yes mobile coverage is notoriously bad (almost as bad as the weather)... I’ve been to every single one since the very first one, except the last 2 years. But will be back next year! 😁

I need to check this out, might have to blow the dust off my surface pro (it has mint installed). It’s good to see how far gaming on Linux has come 😊

So there is an anime airing right now called "The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You" about a dude who has 100 soul mates he falls in love with and starts dating, so I was curious if it stayed committed to the bit and I was not disappointed

And there’s a brilliant opera, Der Meister und Margarita, music and libretto by York Höller that I saw in about 1990. Conducted by Pierre Boulez. A surreal evening!

I REALLY wanted sign up for that, if I were only quallified. saddly I’m not nearly smart enough. 😀

One of the (many) good sides of teaching: you get plenty of time to delve into topics and develop your own material (and code).

I now want to share part of my materials as a #DataScience textbook online:
florian-huber.github.io/data_s…
(work in progress)

All materials and source code is on #github: github.com/florian-huber/data_…

And a pdf version can be found on #zenodo: zenodo.org/records/10074475

in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward installation of Python from the first-party installer works well for Windows and Mac.

I know that veteran programmers love environments, but this is just another confusing abstraction that students have to understand. Better to say "hey, if you want pandas, do `pip install pandas`" and it will just be there. I don't think the 3 conda steps starting at florian-huber.github.io/data_s… are going to make any student say "I love python"

in reply to Charles Tapley Hoyt

@cthoyt oh I see - yes I can see how that would work too. I teach a bioinformatics class on an HPC running Linux and so I've found conda is simplest. But I do have a full week of logging in/ conda initialization in the beginning to get everyone started.

Looks great! The color looks more vibrant to me than your previous shots.

🇩🇪 Germany's Microsoft bill: €209M in 2022, up from €43.5M in 2015! 📈

Despite public goals around #opensource, vendor lock-in increased, raising cost & losing #digitalSovereignty.

Time to embrace #Nextcloud and regain control:

Can you please provide source for that financial statements?

(I would like to compare that with Slovakia. Last time I've checked, one of the figures was to the tune of approx. 30M€ for three years.)

This image was in my head this morning and so now it is on the computer

When I was a child in the 80s, the night sky was filled with stars. And those stars inspired us to imagine other worlds & ask really big questions.

Decades later, the night sky looks like a much lonelier place. Light pollution is increasing & I fear we may lose the ability to be awed by looking up & recognizing our place in the universe.

I don’t know about others, but I sure miss the stars. Image: Luke Stackpoole via Unsplash

you seem to be really enjoying Cumbria specifically. If you don't mind a somewhat terrifying drive, look up Hardknott Pass. It's Britain's steepest road and has lots of insane corners, most notably a hairpin turn where if you come off of the road, you're not going to be getting back on to it again (I nearly died there myself the first time I drove it, in a clapped out Ford S-Max, pitch black and heavy rain!), but there's the remains of a roman Fort there which is a must-see!

A Dangerous Conflation. “We are Jewish writers, artists, and activists who wish to disavow the widespread narrative that any criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic.” nplusonemag.com/online-only/on…

Super powerful. In my ignorance, I am moved.

"We call for a ceasefire in Gaza, a solution for the safe return of the hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and an end to Israel’s ongoing occupation. We also call on governments and civil society in the United States and across the West to stand up against the repression of support for Palestine.

And we refuse to allow such urgent, necessary demands to be suppressed in our names. When we say never again, we mean it."

You always thought that keeping all body parts under the covers was the only way to keep you safe at night. It's only when you bring a furry little monster into your house that you realize that you were right all along.

Still noodling on the dynamics of sustainable and distributive economies. When they shrivel up. When they would predominate.

I think a policy like that of the German Feed in Tariff for solar PV might work. Meaning, something that starts small and seems innocuous, but grows exponentially, and by the time it's obviously a threat it has built its own durable constituency. A head-on conflict from the very beginning seems... not great.
in reply to Zane Selvans

but we have to stop building a coop economy with just piecemeal interventions. We need to build infrastructure for creative futures, not just specific known problems.
