I often find I lose posts on here and it takes me ages to trawl my own archive.

Posty by @oli is a great tool for archiving and searching your old Mastodon feed. Thank you so much for building this.

Presenting my horror short indie film for tonight: I am in the basement folding laundry and the cat keeps getting riled up and then freezing and staring fixedly over my shoulder towards the empty room behind me, watching something.

Given the White House wants U.S. women to have more babies, my talk “Rethinking Population” from 2014 seems particularly relevant.

The key theme is that all around the world, women with an education, the ability to enter the workforce & access to healthcare & medicine choose to have fewer children.

Where do fertility rates remain high? In places where child mortality is high, health conditions are poor & women don’t have as much autonomy & opportunity. #uspol #Trump

IMO, meritocracy is applicable to very narrow and very specific use cases to ensure the people doing the work are qualified and able. For the rest of the human experience - which encompasses the vast majority of one's time living on Earth - it's wholly inappropriate.

El Salvador offers Venezuela prisoner swap involving US deportees

El Salvador's president has offered to repatriate 252 Venezuelans deported by the US and imprisoned in his country - if Venezuela releases the same number of political prisoners.
Nayib Bukele appealed directly to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a post on social media.
He said many of the Venezuelan deportees had committed "rape and murder", while Venezuelan political prisoners were jailed only because they opposed Maduro, whose re-election last year is widely disputed.

The larger point remains, though. AI and data center energy and water use is surging, and we are only at the beginning of this whole thing. For years, data centers energy use stayed below 1% and we were told not to worry. In countries like Ireland, data center energy use is now already over 20%
