"Ubuntu rose to popularity because it made Linux simpler for the end user. 'Linux for human beings' was its motto. I don't see this motto mentioned anywhere now. I wonder if that too is deliberate."

#Ubuntu moving away from .deb is a good idea on paper to get them less reliant on #Debian. It's just the fact of how bad #snap has been as a package manager and no one seems to like it but they're still going full steam ahead.

They want to be kind of Windows of Linux but agreed, why it has to come with this kind of shadiness. I don't know Canonical well but isn't this in their culture somewhat..

Canonical's going to do what Canonical wants for the OS, in contrast to what users actually want and are screaming about, they've been going this direction for a long time. I'd advise moving to Debian, Mint or Fedora if you're not a fan of the experience. This behavior of theirs is not new and will continue to be a thing.

I switched to Mint years ago for a user-centred distribution. Mint developers have made consistently better decisions, at least as far as individual users are concerned. Including making contingency plans to use Debian as a foundation.

Goddammit, is this another thing I have to deal with?

"At least have the decency to provide Gdebi by default for local deb file installation."

Yeah, that's not happening.

I was so confused when I first encountered the lack of.deb support. Thanks for letting me know it wasn’t me it was them.
