With the latest update to #Mastodon's web app, we show you a little reminder when you're about to post a picture without adding alt text. Alt text is crucial for accessibility, but has other perks too, such as making it much easier to search for your post—or filter it. Of course, the reminder can be simply toggled off in preferences.

I would also suggest adding a cookie to check if the user has already been warned. Seeing this multiple times would be a poor user experience.

I just ran into this and it's great - I'd gotten a post ready and got distracted and almost posted without alt text.

Good, but instance owners should have the option to mandate that *all* pictures inputted into toots include alt-text.

useful to know that alt text gets checked by people's filters! What else gets checked, besides just the body of the post?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I think this should have a "don't ask me again" checkbox or similar. A lot of people likely aren't going to find the option in Preferences.

I genuinely think it is the responsibility of the server to implement OCR that will offer an alt text of the visible text especially

That’s great. I’d might replace the second sentence with wording that explains those benefits, to maximize the number of people who do it. “Make your post easier to find in search and more accessible to people who use screen readers.”

"search for your post" you can??? nice! I did try to make it work on my wordpress sight so search also work for alt text but I failed.

I discovered that Alt Text link today. I'm glad it popped up. I filled it out and used is, but I often forget to do so without the reminder. Good job!

For translations, the alttext is also important, especially for images with a lot of text.

This is a great example of boosting user experience!

Also: if you have a base language set and you use alt-text, translation will translate the alt-text as well as your post. Very handy when you include in-image text in the alt-text.

This is really nice and it'd be awesome if it's enabled at update by default. ♥️

Which version will this start with? I gotta check on which of my instances it's enabled at which time. 🙂

What is the difference between the Cancel and the Add Alt Text button?

Great update! Are there any plans to add a toggle for the "Hide" badge displayed on every image? I'd like to, well, hide it.

Do you think adding a little 'makes it more accessible to people with vision disabilities' makes it a bit more clearer? Or is that too much?

Many people might never have heard of alt-text before.

I glad to see that the alt-popover can now be closed by clicking on it. 🥳

And Remember, this isn't Bluesky, if you forget an alt text you can add it when you realise. By "you" I mean everyone. Mastodon and other fediverse instances offer flexible editing, and people that liked that post will be notified of the edit. I know most people know.

Alt text is not only good for accessibility. It makes you think more about what you publish and if it may be offensive to some in our community 👍
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I have to say it has made me add a lot more alt texts than I usually do, wich makes me happy.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Would it be possible to add a template for it to the pop-up/text-field?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

you need to add direct message on mastodon.
If you do this, you will attract many users.
