“I passionately believe that science - all this wonderful knowledge that humans have come together to create - should be open to everyone.”

I can see you folk were early adopters at Mastodon 😀! Great to connect.

I wondered if you could possibly edit this pinned post to put on the good Prof Robert’s Mastodon address rather than Twitter? @aliceroberts
in reply to Euan Lawson

Hello 👋. Nice to #welcome you here. Hope you had a good start so far... and had time to mingle with many interesting people. Thanks for the hint. Unfortunately we don't know of any possibility to adjust this afterwards. But we are happy to find @aliceroberts in #Fediverse .

No worries! From version 4.0 of Mastodon it is possible to edit posts - a great feature - but you may not be on that yet. Thanks for getting back to me and for your work. We flipped to full OA for all our research at #BJGP a couple of years ago, things are changing! 😀

Thing with Science is you don't HAVE to believe in it. It just IS!
in reply to Open Science ✅

totally agree! This is why I also want the #edtech apps we create in our #research labs to be free for all #teachers.
But maintaining #ApplicationsSoftware has a cost. Who will pay for this? 💰💰
I haven't quite figured it our yet... 🤔

I'm so fortunate that my mother, who was raised in the era where women went to college to get their MRS degree and settle down, rather than have a career, studied architecture in college and encouraged me from earliest childhood to be curious about the world and how it works. Therefore, I've loved science all my life!

It's not completely clear to me what you mean to say by "Science must be opened". Scientific knowledge was and is "open", as scientists use to publish in refereed journals and to critically discuss their results at conferences. (Science) journalists pick up the most relevant discoveries/results from research and report them in newspapers, on TV and other media (incl. social media). Thus scientific knowledge is shared with everyone interested and willing to read or listen.

One of my favourite quotes is from Marin Mersenne Harmonie universelle 1636: "Science belongs to both rich and poor, and there is nothing so low and vile in nature that it not be worthy of discussion"

Yep.
Need to find if Alice is on Mastodon and if #humanism is represented.

Science isn't knowledge. It's a process. And that's not the only problem with her: she's portrayed as more than just a science expert... but has never discovered or invented anything significant... then defends this by saying all scientists now just make tiny contributions.

It's OK that many do, but she then implies that anyone discovering big problems with orthodoxy isn't a scientist.

Poison.

To add the info missing from the picture description: A smiling woman (blurred background suggests a rural outdoor setting).

Agreed though, sadly, even when it is explained and proven there is a vocal element who choose to think it’s all just a conspiracy theory.

Most of that knowledge is now stored in electronic form on the "cloud", etc, - is another reason to not cause a cultural collapse by degrading ecology.

Having said that, the desire to fly on Jets to Disney land, etc, is more of a priority to lay people. But, in the age of severe ecological degradation, priorities will shift.

But what about THE PROFIT???

How do we profit from an intelligent, informed, thoughtful populace??!

This will NEVER do!

in reply to Open Science ✅

But it is, is not it? Some just stubbornly refuse to study and accept it!

Nextcloud has an App called "Collectives" and I plan to use it as a place to collect whatever knowledge I do and present it as collections publicly to the web. It's Federated and the platform is collaborative friendly.

Furthermore Yunohost is an excellent backend web server management system. There is probably a proper noun for this but everyone who wants to build their own webserver might be very interested in Yunohost.
