Making ranked lists can certainly be a convenient way to communicate and organize things, but it seems ridiculous to rank the significance of Nobel Prizes. As if the toxicity of prize culture, and all of the amazing discoveries and scientists that were overlooked over the years, isn't bad enough

I haven't read their work so accept I might be missing a lot, but these optics are not great. As I understand this: three men (two white English, one Turkish) win the Nobel Prize for Economics for proving that colonies are poorer if colonial powers steal Indigenous wealth.

Shocking story about mRNA pioneer/Nobel winner Katalin Karikó, whose early advisor at Temple tried to have her deported & derailed her career because she dared to look for a better-paying job.

The 2023 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective #mRNA #vaccines against COVID-19.

Despite all the known issues with these (& other) prizes, this one makes me particularly happy: it is extremely well deserved and (another) clear example of what basic science can do for humanity.
