#DecemberAdventure (ides of march edition) day 5

spent some more time tinkering with #uxn. got nerd-sniped by the (integer) `sqrt` routine defined in the math library (wiki.xxiivv.com/site/uxntal_li…). looks like it's a clever iterative application of the formula for the sum 1+..+n.

according to wikipedia there's plenty of ways to compute square roots. i suppose when it comes to a uxn implementation it's a matter of optimizing for need, time, and space

also! more small-brush #shodo #calligraphy practice. i really should start learning more interesting kanji (maybe next time i'll try to transcribe some sentences from actual text!)

Today's #calligraphy practice: this now-classic copypasta from @lynnesbian (CC4.0-BY-NC-SA)

I think this nib probably needs replacing, it keeps chewing up the paper and as you can see the fibres occasionally caught in the nib drag the ink on certain strokes like the tails of "h", "k", and "a". It is a Hunt 22, on the stiffer side, not capable of the dramatic changes in line width you get with a 101 or my beloved Leonardt Principal, but good for smaller writing.

Written in English round hand on a graph paper pad: Friday, February 20, 2026 Hunt #22 nib, India ink "i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux." i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux." the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long." with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death. —@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space, Jan. 14, 2019 CC4-BY-NC-SA

Weeeeeee! First 'proper' piece using the Foundational Hand script I picked up yesterday.

Materials: Pilot Parallel and Rotring calligraphy pens, Sakura Pigma Micron, Ecoline and Diamine ink applied with brushes, and Edding Gold fineliner, on Daler Rowney 90gm calligraphy paper.

Off-white parchment paper calligraphied and illustrated. The calligraphy reads: "Roses are red Water comes in litres Trebuchets can use a counterweight to launch a 90kg stone projectile Over 300 meters" It's decorated with acanthus scrolls, thin vines, green leaves, and roses. There's a trebuchet at the top that has roses growing over it.
