My guess now is that the rounder birds are hens, and the narrower birds with longer tails are the roosters. It could just be an age difference of a week or so.. But I'm starting to learn not to rely on coloring... The biggest JiDokKo rooster that just went to the farmer's market to be with 4 hens, that rooster started out named Matilda(aka Mathew) because, on hatching Mathew was all brown while the other same-day chick had a striking pattern of stripes. The same-day chick was hatched by a silky hen and much more athletic and adventuresome so I assumed the striped one was a rooster and all the plain ones were hens.. But now it looks like I got mostly roosters as they have narrow bodies and are developing interesting patterns of colors with their tails (and wings??). I have to learn the whole process for making soup or spit-roasts with the rooster. They are beautiful and I know the feeling that it's a shame but it's hard on everybody (especially the hens) to have too many roosters running around mauling hens causing a ruckus...
