It really really pleases me to see so many of you here following along.

I post about what I am reading, and share plenty of quotes and comments on the books, over on my Bookwyrm profile. If you're also there, I'm at bookwyrm.social/user/fionnain
in reply to Fionnรกin

@luka In fact, I'm not sure that following @fionnain does actually follow my Bookwyrm account. Seems I have to approve a follow, and I have no idea how/where to do this (no option on Bookwyrm as far as I can see). I guess this involves linking the accounts somehow, but I have no idea how...

As somebody that has been using forums for as long as I can remember, I can honestly say that the #GamingonLinux forum is one of the most welcoming I have ever had the honor of participating inโ€ฆ Granted, Iโ€™m not there very often, but whenever I am, I am always impressed at how friendly and helpful most members are. I donโ€™t always agree with Gaming on Linuxโ€™s choices or opinions, but I rate their forums as some of the best, especially within the #Linux Community.

"The dark edges between the thalli are called the prothallus, and are where the fungal partner is present without the algal partner" โ€” Dr. Mike Simms, Lichenologist, personal correspondence.

The searching fungi draws borders on stone.

A lichen that is coloniser and collaborator, teaching me something about porous edges and permeable places. Apparently, after growing for thousands of years, they create spaces where they (co)exist.

There is a lot to unpick here, and a lot to learn.

@mycorrhiza the lichen keep tricking me too, creating shapes that seem familiar when I look at them for too long. I am pretty sure they are doing this to offer some perspective on how we all live on this small rock-in-space, but I haven't been able to understand yet. Hopefully some day.

Servius' list of the Pignora Imperii shoud be corrected, according to Falconet: I am convinced that instead of acus matris Deum, one should read caus, the same word as cautes.

From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pignora_โ€ฆ

The first item on the list: "The needle of the Mother of the Gods (Acus Matris Deum), kept in the Temple of Cybele on the Palatine Hill."

No not a needle, but a stone, indeed, a meteorite.

Dominance Rituals
What Elon Musk is doing with Twitter and journalism is a dominance ritual much like the ones the 45th POTUS was pulling. The best response is to leave Twitter and ignore the Mediocre Bond Villain #MBV.

Agree....the media was complicate with Trump all the time he was president. They should have held him to account or blackballed him but they were too concerned about their audiences/advertisers/$$$$
in reply to Muse

I fear we no longer have real journalism anymore, just word processors to the big bucks. No one ever asks the right questions ...If I can think of them then these so called journalists are just ass kissers

That is such little man energy... little tiny man.

Art Trend of 2022: How AI Art Emerged and Polarized the Art World

Artificial intelligence has been around for years, but AI-generated artwork has really taken off in 2022. With its growing presence and its rise in implementation, AI has proven to be a powerful yet controversial tool in the art world. Its use leads many to ask several questions: Is it art? Is it cheating? And who does the credit go to?

in reply to Muse

haveibeentrained.com/ also has a link to opting out of AI training for Stable Diffusion V3
(it's early days and the search tool needs some refinement but someone's making a start, so that's good)

Pretty sure all dark chocolate only comes in single serving packages regardless of the size of the package.

Now imagine if Mastodon didnโ€™t exist and this was happening.โ€ฆ

Arenโ€™t we lucky that some guy in Germany decided to spend his own time, money, and effort to build it?

Hopefully weโ€™ll get lucky againโ€ฆ

Or, you know, maybe we can finally consider supporting tech thatโ€™s in the common good from the common purse. And fund organisations and long-term development, not just ad-hoc academic โ€œprojectsโ€ that get abandoned the moment the money is gone.

#funding #tech #eu #commons

in reply to Danielle

Unless Iโ€™m mistaken, not until it was up and running. Please correct me if Iโ€™m wrong @Gargron. Did you receive any EU funding for Mastodon at the start and is there an ongoing/permanent funding stream from them thatโ€™s not based on implementing certain features/specific deliverables?

(Because there should be.)

This entry was edited (3 years ago)
in reply to Aral Balkan

I didn't receive any EU funding until 2022 through @NGIZero. No, there is no ongoing stream, it was based on a specific timeframe and a specific set of milestones. I started working on Mastodon in 2016 without any external funding.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Thank you. So many voices have a place to be heard due to your thoughtfulness, hard work from years ago and ongoing.

#grateful

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @violetathena @NGIZero

I encourage you to get more funding because you need to face growth, exponential growth. And all on AWS will not make it on the long run.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron @violetathena @NGIZero Thanks, Eugen.

Thatโ€™s exactly the issue Iโ€™ve raised twice at the European Parliament now. That we need funding for organisations not features and we need it at the start, not after itโ€™s impossible to ignore that something works and is being used (because not everyone can or should have to undertake the burden of getting to that point by themselves. Some of us do, but if we require that as a rite of passage weโ€™re going to limit the potential for alternatives.)

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

In #French, gol is sometime used as a shortened version of #gogol, which is a rather derivative way to say someone is #stupid. I know you're an #English-speaking channel, mainly geared towards an #English-speaking public, but stillโ€ฆ
