This is a major coup for Media Matters for America, which has led outreach to this latest list of major brands to pull ads from the deadbird site:

The European Commission has had enough of Musk's deadbird site -- at least enough to stop paying him for the privilege of swimming in a toxic waste dump -- and people are talking about that.

Which reminds me:

Please don't beat up on people who leave that toxic place, even if you believe, however righteously, that they should have left long ago.

They're doing the right thing now. Thank them, and encourage others to do the same.

I am totally addicted to this game, special attention has been paid to item balancing, it is possible to build very different builds on each run. And the story mode allows you to discover the mechanics¹ and subtleties of the game gradually.

¹ For example, in story mode, there is no question of mana at the start (so no magic item), nor of hast (a very powerful mechanic for those who master it).

Been thinking about Smash Mouth a lot lately. Today I've found out about Steve Harwell's death and want to share this gem with everyone:

Sorry About Your Penis
youtube.com/watch?v=G56XZxJIlg…

I listen to this album pretty regularly, and I think it's great, but only today discovered that they put out a 20th anniversary edition with a couple extra tracks, including this one.

P.S. I'm aware of Steve's documented shitty behaviour as a person so I'm focusing on the music here.

I fully switched to Firefox a few months ago when Google kept on pushing their "Manifest V3" Chrome policy, now that they continue to push it and remove V2 (and with it meaningful adblockers) from Chrome in 2024 maybe you want to start migrating as well?

developer.chrome.com/en/blog/r…

Don't go to Brave btw. It's a shit company that keeps doing shady stuff and is run by a homophobe. There are so many browsers, just pick one. (Whether other Chromium-based browsers will keep an interface for effective customization for users around is for you to research. Just use Firefox TBH).

Day 2: Ten Days, Ten Films.

I’ve done this before. It’s a lot of fun!
Over ten days you pick an image from a film without any title to give away where it is from, so that people can guess. You can also nominate others to do the same. That way more people are in on the game! (or not--your choice 😀 )

Just a warning to any of you who still think that adblock is only going to get better, the MV3 transition has started up again. Adblock is basically dead for the normies very soon, the only solution will be integrated solutions like what Brave does developer.chrome.com/blog/resu…

most chromium forks except edge said they will support mv2 so chromium users should be good provided they're not using Google chrome or edge
If Google bans it from the play store like they did with ad nauseum then they're screwed

The new episode of Serving Up #Science tackles “expiration dates” & why so many of the “sell by” & “use by” dates on #food labels are meaningless while contributing to our enormous food waste problem + #ClimateChange.
youtu.be/O5XssdVk0hQ?si=Mg4AHU…
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Nice primer on labeling! I’m conscious of the meanings (or lack thereof) of the dates on my foods, but am still guilty of the food waste crime. It’s so hard to feel good about someday actually eating those ancient pickles in the back of my fridge…
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Generally, I give meat 5 days, other refrigerated food 7 days past the date, and a month for dried, bottled or canned food. (Except for dry pasta and dry rice. I’ve never actually come across dry pasta or dry rice that’s gone bad…🤔)

Interesting results from the British Academy's experiment of randomizing the awarding of research grants. While all the proposals eligible for funding have passed a high quality threshold random selection of what proposals receives funding increases diversity quite dramatically on several dimensions.

Sticker shock: MBTA says nearly $25 billion needed to repair aging system

That cost includes only repairs and not any upgrades to the system
Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton also issued a statement Thursday calling the T's announcement "the honest assessment we've been waiting for." He added that "$24.5 billion is a big number, but it’s not shocking given the accumulation of decades of under-investment."

This happened at our station. A retiring engineer advised the chief engineer that a key part of the satellite controller needed to be replaced.

The chief engineer ignored him.

The part failed, leaving us no way to steer the satellite dish. So we had to spend considerably more routing ALL of our satellite traffic (network feeds, commercial feeds, etc.) through a third-party provider.

I ran into Tony a couple of years later and told him what had happened. He laughed.

in reply to Joseph Teller

And thats what happens when the Republicans screw with the budgets, replace the controlling board with their own political hacks, drain off funds to add a rail line that pretty much serves the wealthy but lets rolling stock on the rest of the system crumble, awards contracts to untried outside companies (5 years after being contracted and paid a Chinese contractor still has failed to deliver passenger cars or engines) etc
