@leighelse @Anachron For clarification, no. These require a user to self host a home assistant server (which is easy!). You're able to use any SBC for this.

The idea behind this is that rather than spending 80 dollars on one speaker, you could buy two speakers + sbc.

Home Assistant do the same thing with their own speaker. (They also do cloud, although that's not the point of the PineVox.)

(their speaker: home-assistant.io/voice-pe/ )

The PineVox CAN do voice wake up detection locally though.

PINE64 reshared this.

in reply to PINE64

@Anachron Thanks for the clarification. My concern has always been the cloud connection, at least to Big Tech services, so this still looks promising.

Self talk:
That's terrible!
That's fine, I'm still learning.
Why can't I get this to work?
It's fine, just keep being myself and keep practicing!
It doesn't have to be perfect. It just needs to be done!
in reply to Muse

Gotta put the 'self' away, just do the work!

I was looking at possibly getting a digital stylus for the Pixel Tablet I got last week but am not sure I'd use it as I'm pretty tuned in to using my Wacom on my desktop.

I quite like Gustav Klimt's paintings. @Joyce Donahue
They can also be a bit saucy!

@Linux_Is_Best ....is.... is that... good? I only ask because, in my experience, keeping fire away from computers has been one of my most reliable keys to success.

New interview with me in CU Boulder Today: "Why Meta fired its fact-checkers and what you can do about it" colorado.edu/today/2025/01/10/…

Basically, shilling the fediverse.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Personally, I'd regulate them along boundaries, so US free speech absolutism cannot leak out of the US. EU rules apply in EU, say, and are rigorously applied in each geography. If that means these corporations see no business model in EU, then great!

I'd at the very least legislate (preferably universally) that the algorithm be open and subject to scrutiny and legal control.

New Math Suggests 'Impossible' Third Type of Particle Could Exist

Quantum mechanics has long classified particles into just two distinct types: fermions and bosons.
Now physicists from Rice University in the US have found a third type might be possible after all, at least mathematically speaking. Known as a paraparticles, their behavior could imply the existence of elementary particles nobody has ever considered.

New: Meta has deleted trans and nonbinary Messenger themes, as well as the blog posts announcing them. Happens the same week that it has changed its rules to allow users to say LGBTQ+ people are "mentally ill"

youtube.com/watch?v=KnozAHKTz9… the thing about "clearing the uncanny valley" is that the audacity with which various teams claim they've done it is nearly perfectly inversely proportional to how badly they've stumbled straight into it. and this same cycle has repeated for decades now.
meanwhile, pixar et al have been content to confidently hold a sick handplant at the near edge of the valley, with well-acted stylized characters. at some point you have to ask what ideologies are being upheld here.

November 2020: the Servo project moved to the Linux Foundation, pretty quickly everyone understands that the project is abandoned..

September 2023: the Servo project joined Linux Foundation Europe, and is now one of the most active projects there.

January 2025: Google together with The Linux Foundation have announced a new initiative to fund future development of the Chromium ecosystem.

I wonder how independent Linux Foundation Europe is from the Linux Foundation?
