A collaborator found out that the US State Dept is seeking public input on whether "satellite signature reduction" should be subject to ITAR regs.

Translation: should satellite operators who make their satellites fainter (in order to not destroy the night sky quite as much) be allowed to talk about how they did it?

I think liberals consistently fail to understand how much US culture is saturated in a cowboy/gangster/disruption ethic that privileges risk over safety and greatness over equity.

There are virtues to this ethic. But it also comes with a legacy of brutality that is only too visible right now.

Thanks for writing this. I think chunks of it could apply to the "longing for days of Empire" mentality in the UK too, as espoused by the likes of Boris Johnson. I've often found it interesting that the heroes of that tribe tend to be explorers (Shackleton, Livinstone, Scott, etc) creating an analogous mythology to the wild west. Plenty to ponder.

oh yeah... remember who he wants to be controlling things in regards to the CDC, etc. It will get MUCH worse... as in the CDC will be near useless under Trump this time. He plans on purging it, just like he wants to purge the joint chiefs of staff of the military, the FBI, the Education system etc. And the current speaker will do whatever he wants, if they can ram rod it thru.

I went to the Lamberton Conservatory in Rochester, NY yesterday. Well worth the paltry $3 entry fee. Cool plants and also turtles and tortoises and little birds crawling and hopping around underfoot.

A tortoise reaching up on their front legs to get a closer look at us. The legs are covered in small and large brown and yellow scales. The head is fully extended from the shell and turning a bit to the left, giving us side eye.
A small pale gray bird with yellow feet, running to the right. The feet and background are blurry because it was moving fast, but somehow I managed to move the camera at the same pace as the body, which is pretty clear.

Made yesterday a couple very quick rough mockups of how lists on Mastodon could be extended to be public and/or used as starter packs. I think it could be one of the easiest way to share follow recommandations with a minimum of change from the bits Mastodon already has? (another could be being able to generate a CSV of a specific set of people and then share that to be imported, but that’s much more technical)

Why is YouTube's Next Video button so big? Double-tapping to skip 10 seconds is like threading the needle. Which MBA-having middle manager has "numbers of videos loaded" as their KPI?
