Evidence is mounting that Elon Musk manipulated the X/Twitter algorithm to boost his own posts as well as those of prominent conservatives. I talk about a new pre-print, and whether or not BlueSky is our savior skepchick.org/2024/12/is-elon-…

In 2012, French beekeepers encountered an unusual phenomenon when they discovered blue and green #honey in their hives. This strange coloration immediately aroused the interest and curiosity of beekeepers, and they went in search of the cause. In their investigations, they found that the bees were collecting colored sugar from a nearby M&M factory.

The factory had left remnants of colored sugar in the candy manufacturing process, and the bees had used this sugar as a food source.

Academic trolled for PhD

"An academic who received death and rape threats after posting a picture of herself on X with her completed PhD has said she feels "quite unfazed by the vitriol".

"Dr Ally Louks' post has been viewed 100 million times since she first posted it on 27 November, and has attracted more than 11,000 responses.

"The University of Cambridge supervisor, whose thesis is in English Literature, stressed the majority of comments have been "incredibly nice, kind and generous", but after her post "was retweeted by a couple of very right wing accounts" it began to attract negative attention.

"X has been approached for comment, while Cambridgeshire Police confirmed an investigation into a report of a hate incident has begun."

in reply to Muse

Nicely done on her part: good paper to complete her PhD and hopefully police will make some arrests for the threats.

in reply to Muse

@𝕕𝕚𝕒𝕟𝕖𝕒 🏳️‍⚧️🦋 In your dressing gown? When she said that women are protesting that they're "not a cat lady," it reminded me of the women who would protest that they're "not a feminist." Your aunts were, darling. It's not making you more attractive.
in reply to Muse

We need to take it back as a badge of pride. I'm proud to be a cat lady because cats are nicer than most people!

Two years ago, @micahflee got banned from Twitter (and later X) for posting a link to a Mastodon account that tracked Elon Musk's private jet.

Now, in the midst of an exodus from X, he's launched a tool to archive and delete your X account so you can escape, too. wired.com/story/x-delete-posts…

Today, Kash Patel sent a letter to my counsel @markzaid threatening legal action & demanding that I retract my comments on MSNBC about his unfitness to serve as FBI Director. This aligns with his threats against the media & political opponents, revealing how he might conduct himself if confirmed in the role. I stand by my statements—my priority remains the safety & security of the American people. I am not the only one who has expressed concerns about him. So why me?...And so it begins.

waaaaahaahaa boo hoo hoo! ohhhh it's too hard, it's too much, i simply can't display a folder with 20,000 images in it without hanging! boo hoo hoo i'm the built in android folder chooser and it's too HARD for me to load ALLLLL that data!!! i am a piece of software designed by google for the sole purpose of displaying directory contents and I DON'T WANNA DO IT!!! a snapdragon 7 series chip with four cortex A78s and four cortex A55s is NOT ENOUGH!

Lynnesbian reshared this.

in reply to Lynnesbian

ok the reason i was (and remain) mad about this is because i used to have my reddit client save files to a folder, but i had to patch the app to work with the new reddit API bullshit and the settings got wiped, and the app defaulted to a different folder. but i couldn't change it back to use the old folder because it had so many images in it that the file picker just hanged every time i tried.

i solved it today. by moving all the files to a different folder, selecting that folder in the reddit client, then moving all the files back.

i hate android

@TTimo any idea who I bug about the steam game list having the game titles, release date and price just vanish if minimum browser front size is set above 16? (Chrome and Firefox same problem)

Seems like it should be more responsive to text size than this

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

unfortunately the web folks recommend using the zoom setting instead. The minimum font size option is essentially unsupportable (in the sense that there's always a value high enough to break a modern layout website).

in reply to TTimo

Oh I get that, there has to be a limit, but under 20px is not exactly big, guess i'll start zooming in then lol
