Oath Keeper members brought explosives to DC area around January 6 and had a 'death list

cnn.com/2022/07/08/politics/oa…

Prosecutors will attempt to prove that nine Oath Keepers charged with seditious conspiracy -- Stewart Rhodes, Kelly Meggs, Kenneth Harrelson, Jessica Watkins, Roberto Minuta, Joseph Hackett, David Moerschel, Thomas Caldwell, and Edward Vallejo -- extensively prepared for violence and plotted to stop Joe Biden from assuming the presidency.

in reply to tom grzyb

All nine have pleaded not guilty and have denied allegations

This is going to be weird: "Nope, not me!"

@tom grzyb

If the President takes the necessary steps for the common good at a time of crisis, is this "dictatorship", or is it "leadership"?

Problem is that he can try to take all kinds of steps, but if the Republicans keep resisting anything he does (and they will, they did exactly that under Obama), he can't do a lot. A dictator could.

in reply to tom grzyb

The US has legitimate avenues for the President to take unilateral actions, independent of Congress. Personally, I doubt the Constitutionality of some of these powers, but almost no one in Government does.

Red flags missed: How the July 4 suspect was allowed to slip through the system

apnews.com/article/gun-violenc…

Illinois’ “red-flag” law could have stopped the suspect in the Independence Day parade shooting from buying a gun or at least delayed the purchase of the weapon he’s accused of using to kill seven people and wound dozens.

Massachusetts lawmakers announce plan for one-time tax rebates of $250 to individuals, $500 to couples - except poorer people

wcvb.com/article/massachusetts…

The people who need the money the most get nothing.

in reply to tom grzyb

Laziness is not an excuse when the people who most need the money are left out. And this may hurt the Democrats more than they realize - bad feelings tend to linger, while the effects of a $250 check for most people will not.
in reply to tom grzyb

so that the number of people having to pay less than $250 in tax isn’t negligible.

US tax practices feature withholding so, you are paying a tax, even if you get a partial or "full" refund.

Russia is set to switch off the gas for work on a key pipeline — and Germany fears the worst

cnbc.com/2022/07/05/germany-fe…

And why did Germany implicitly trust Russia?

in reply to tom grzyb

... and then there's Finland. Also having its needed supply of petrol/oil cut by Moscow. But funding for the sand battery.

So two things here: Russia cutting its nose (just a bit) to harm both Europe and Finland, and Germany as a gateway/canary.

Beer (at last)

Fuck yeah, at last!

My Christmas In July Advent Calendar is at the post office.

I will probably double up.

So today, the 6th, I have 1 and 6
7th, 2 and 7
8th, 3 and 8
9th, 4 and 9
10th, 5 and 10

...then I am on track.

Going to read the descriptions carefully. I'm not a fan of this Australian thing with chilling all beers. Other than lagers, I'd take most craft beers at what I call "cellar temperature," around 12ºC.

in reply to Matthew "Smiffy" Smith

Beer (at last)
agreed. When in Canberra recently I had a dark ale and it came out very cold, and my first thought was, this could have been warmer.

in reply to tom grzyb

This one is real fancy, as it has a solar-cell for power and a transmitter...
in reply to tom grzyb

someone has a “garden” in there

Ah, now that would make sense. For sure, a transmitter, cam, and data handling is pretty elaborate compared to a camera-in-casing strapped to a tree w/an SD card.

in reply to tom grzyb

I'd expect much strife between any displaced critters and the established ones in the surrounding areas.
