Me when my former students ask about grad school

To be clear I don't think scholarship or learning are scams, but academia as it is now - depending on abusive labor practices in the name of what?
That's a scam

in reply to cyborgneticz

they provide an institutional affiliation for when that is useful, a community to do scholarly things with others (talks and writing time), and grant management (with a lower overhead than a traditional institution). The way they're organised also interests me with a minimal hierarchy and some structures to encourage self organisation.
in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan
Thanks so much for sharing!

I took a look at the webpage and it definitely seems like one of these things that goes into my bottomless pit of "it would be so cool to be involved in this, but".

The good part is, from time to time one can actually dive into one's pit and do one of the things.

in reply to Alejandro Gaita-Ariño

@agaitaarino happy to share! At it's baseline ronin just requires an application, orientation, and a yearly renewal. After that initial barrier, participation in their systems is whatever you make of it. I'm still feeling out how I want to participate with the organisation but let me know if you have any questions. More ronin scholars may begin showing up here someday, i just connected with @emonosson here a couple days ago

omg so cool to hear that this work has progressed. I remember talking about it with @Defectivebrayne on #microtwjc so many years ago. Those discussions were one of the moments that really brought me closer with the wider academic community and showed me the value of the birbsite and online conversation. Plus i'm just tickled with the idea of resurrecting old medicine.

Tagging our reboot of the journal club @MicrobioJC

in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan @Defectivebrayne @MicrobioJC Thank you! We just submitted an application for the next big grant on this project, so fingers crossed we can keep up momentum.

quick question are you guys able to track the tic tac UAP? How’s that UAP investigation going?

I've seen folks try in the past. Eager to know if the network is large enough now. Plus pinning and following hashtags hopefully makes it easier for the haves to find the have-nots. I unfortunately am a have-not in this case. Unless :scihub: :BlobCatKnife:

the only way I can almost relate to a pound is 4 McDonald’s burger patties. 7,700 x 4 patties is a lot of meat. When will you lot give it up and switch to metric?

If you don’t know what I mean when I say “surveillance capitalism” or “people farming”, here’s a quick overview I did for the BBC a little while ago:

bbc.co.uk/ideas/videos/surveil…

(Where we differ with Shoshana, who coined the former term, is that she sees it as a corruption of capitalism, whereas I see it as the natural evolution of capitalism in the digital network age.)

Some have violated the winter beauty code, and become a disgrace to those who admire it💔

I’ve always loved rainbows and marvel every time I see them. My honeymoon in Hawai’i was filled with multiple rainbows daily, including double- and even triple-rainbows. But now I have a new goal - seeing a supernumary rainbow in person!

"16. Safety is a characteristic of systems and not of their components

Safety is an emergent property of systems; it does not reside in a person, device or department of an organization or system. Safety cannot be purchased or manufactured; it is not a feature that is separate from the other components of the system. This means that safety cannot be manipulated like a feedstock or raw material."

We went for a drive and brunch in the Yarra Valley region of Victoria. This is where all the wineries grow their grapes. It's also where many people have their weddings. I found a place that had outdoor dining, which had not been open for some time because of the flooding. It was a lovely day, but most people were inside having wedding meals. We didn't have to book for the outdoor area. We sat next to a frog pond where the froggies were all singing away, and we had all these stunning views. The food was excellent!

@Marek Bachmann :friendica: Ah, you need to run bin/composer install --no-dev whenever the composer.lock file changes.

Thx, that fixed it. Nice! Was pulling the last times without worrying about that 😉

This #SmallBusinessSaturday, we're sharing a few examples of #smallbiz innovators who worked with @nasa @sbirgov to develop tech for our missions while impacting life on Earth. From a sustainable protein alternative to compactable satellite antennas, read on to learn more.
#NASATechnology

For humans to live far from Earth, we'll need food easily produced with minimal resources. With STTR funds, @naturesfynd & @montanastate developed a bioreactor to cultivate fungus into an edible protein. The tech will soon be tested on the @Space_Station: go.nasa.gov/3Vw0VZ6
#NASATechnology
in reply to NASA

fungus... Like mushroom? Also what about water and electrolytes.
in reply to NASA

Looks like a kitchen sponge. Hope they can make some with sri racha flavor.

Tendeg, LLC advanced its deployable parabolic antenna (commonly known as a dish antenna) with @sbirgov funds. This tech has supported @NASAEarth science and commercial missions, helping to capture images of the Earth’s surface for scientific research: go.nasa.gov/3u4B3ry
#NASATechnology

With the help of NASA STTR awards, woman-owned #smallbiz @MangoMaterials & the @coschoolofmines partnered to develop a system that produces a sustainable bioplastic from methane gas in space. But make it fashion – their tech could also be used on Earth: go.nasa.gov/3F3QyX6
#NASATechnology

Your #smallbiz can start its journey with the NASA Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) program by submitting a proposal to our Phase I solicitation, opening January 2023. Keep an eye on go.nasa.gov/3F3KDBh for updates!
