Back to work this morning. How are YOU feeling?

working on setting up a personal mastodon instance, following these directions: jacobian.org/til/my-mastodon-i…

doing this because I own the domain for my blog, so why not for mastodon too?

I finally decided on a domain name and started a new personal website: be.place

Currently it's a very bare bones static site just to host my DJ mixes. I'm using the Zola static site generator deployed on Vercel and hosting the DJ mixes on Cloudflare R2. Both of those are free for my use case. All I had to pay was $65 to register the domain.

Maryam Mirzakhani was the first woman & Iranian to earn the Fields Medal in math for her brilliant work in hyperbolic geometry.

Her achievements influenced quantum field theory, engineering & material science & may have applications related to how the universe began.

Mirzakhani was an immigrant & became a Stanford professor. She passed away at just 40 in 2017. In her words:

“The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to more patient followers.”

Dr. Maryam is not only a great Mathematician but she was also a great ambassador for Math as she openly spoke about how she suffered from Math anxiety when she was young, Faced humiliation from teachers because of it and yet overcame it see the beauty in Math.

Very few in her position would have the inclination to reveal such things.

Wombat Lockdown Wildlife Photographer of the Year Finalist.
Douglas Gimesy (Australia) shows two baby bare-nosed wombats asleep at the home of their caregiver during lockdown.

These baby wombats were found alive inside their mothers' pouches after their mothers – survivors of bushfires in the Australian state of Victoria – were killed by cars. Usually the pair would have been cared for at Goongerah Wombat Orphanage, but with the COVID-19 lockdown in place Emily Small had to provide them with their regular feeds at her apartment instead.

When these young wombats are released back into the wild, they will once again have to survive the effects of the climate emergency, including floods, drought and bushfires. If this wasn't enough, they will also have to cope with habitat destruction and avoiding collisions with cars on country roads.

ChatGPT: It is not possible to determine the name of the fourth child without more information.

in reply to Danny (he/they)

User: The answer is in the question

ChatGPT: I apologize for the confusion. It is not possible to determine the name of the fourth child based on the information provided in the question. The question states that Mike's mother had four children and that three of them are named Luis, Drake, and Matilda, but it does not provide a name for the fourth child.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Oddly, the early days of computing programmers were disproportionately women.

Coding in machine language took persistence, precision and a lot of effort for small reward

Once higher level languages took over (and money & prestige rose) men started to dominate that field.

There are no known fields of endeavour where the achievements of smart men are creditted to women.....

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I’m all for equal opportunity. But the idea that every profession should be 50% male and 50% female ignores the simple fact that women and men are biologically different.

Okay, doing my ChatGPT-induced extra formalizing of academic honesty standards for this semester: nathanschneider.info/school/ac…

Trying to just treat AI as more of the same.

Any feedback?

h/t to my colleague Rick Stevens, from whom I forked this.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

I see you have a section specifically addressing AI generally. I wonder if it would help to be more specific. For example, any student typing part of their work on a phone or tablet will see AI generated text predictions and autocorrections. Is merely seeing the prediction “using AI” and requires attribution. If so, how? is it a new type of citation?

Just sharing thoughts since you asked. Haven’t taken a college class in 20 years and have never taught one, so I have little experience.

in reply to Tom Resing

@resing Thanks! Yes, I guess I would put everything from text predictions to ChatGPT in the same bucket. Autocorrect, not so much. But what is the most relevant category? Generative AI?
in reply to Nathan Schneider

You're welcome, and I'm curious to hear how this goes. I wish I had a great answer on how to be more specific. I'll think about it. Generative AI would still apply for some autocorrect, from my perspective.
Here's an example of a software company explaining some details of the AI for their autocorrect typewise.app/blog/build-autoco…
in reply to Nathan Schneider

a fun exercise might be to ask students to use AI to write an essay and then the students need to critique the essay that AI wrote.

I asked ChatGPT a technical co-op tax question. It was undergrad-level well written but the content was just wrong. It used platitudes to cover for lack of knowledge.
