"Learning to listen carefully and focus on others takes hard workโand it requires you to find a way to quiet the thoughts that may distract you when youโre supposed to be listening. Quieting these thoughts is what humility is all about.
"Patience is another important skill to have in your arsenal if you want to become a better listener. You must be patient enough to let the conversation flow naturally, rather than trying to chime in with your own stories or focusing on your own thoughts.
"And you must be patient with yourself. Becoming an active listener requires time and practice. You wonโt pick it up overnight, but if youโre patient, over time you will find yourself using your active listening skills to make life better."

I finally ran a benchmark (should have done this months ago when I bought the thing). And, my seems to be underperforming, as I expected.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what I can do to fix this? Is it just bad silicon? This benchmark is underperforming compared to the exact lesser counterpart of the same manufacturer.

dell has made the genius move of completely changing their naming scheme for all products. gone are the latitudes and XPSs and inspirons. now we have a two-pronged system: there's three categories (dell, dell pro, dell pro max (yes, really)), as well as three tiers (base, plus, premium)
this means we'll now have something like "Dell Pro Max 13 Premium" instead of "Dell XPS+ 13", and "Dell 15" instead of "Dell Inspiron 15". in some ways, this is clearer, sure, but it has the same problem replacing tweets with "posts" does: "XPS" on its own is short and memorable and doesn't require you to mention the brand. now it's a Dell Pro Max Premium, which is far clunkier. there's a reason samsung calls it an "S24 Ultra" and not a "Samsung 24 Ultra Premium".
dude, you're getting a Dell Pro Max 15 Premium!

But in reality those important conversations are ( or probably should be ) a fraction of my daily interactions. My brain would fry if I tried to be active/active all the time. Someone who demands active all the time seems like kind of an energy vampire.
Always nice when type a's ( not you muse ) tell me how to behave.

in reply to Muse • • •Liam was asked to write articles to help new young workers to better understand how to successfully function as adults. I find his advice clear and insightful, much better than the usual "how to" sort, and surprisingly better than many of the people writing as counsellors and psychologists. His advice is thorough, respectful and upbeat.
As you may know, I play a game called "Kind Words". Many young people are struggling with just communicating with one another. Liam's writing has been giving me some great things I can say to the young people on this game when they ask about how to get along with friends, family, teachers, romantic partners, and co-workers. I like being reminded of some of these lessons, and I know many older adults who could also use a reminder!

When I was at ICANN I realized that I, as an American, tend to be viewed by much of the world as excessively forceful and direct, particularly by Asians. I am willing to understand that desire for indirection, but it does seem to me that I ought not be required to move 100% of the distance towards euphemism and indirection; I would hope that while I learn to be less forceful that others learn to be more accepting of strongly expressed ideas.
I am a fan of Ralph Waldo Emerson's words: "โIf you would be a man speak what you think to-day in words as hard as cannon balls, and to-morrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again.โ
