...the sooner, the better...just had another human attacked the other day, sadly the momma bear was the ultimate loser.

I've been using #linux for over 20 years and TIL that I could have been searching my BASH history using ctrl+r instead of using up/down to flip through entries. 🤯 Haven't tried this yet, but: McFly seems to make that search smarter: ostechnix.com/mcfly-a-replacem…

Another cool-looking utility I haven't tried yet: dust (github.com/bootandy/dust). Getting disk space under control with du/df is always an exhausting effort.

@amcooper That also looks amazing! I'll give it a try. I should have known that folks would have improved history navigation in linux. 😂

I've noticed a small wave of new people making their way to Mastodon from the birdsite.

Here is my brief Mastodon guide for social media worriers that may prove useful for making yourself more at home.

A green red rotating feedback loop. Made with "analog Nor analog". But was not able to reproduce this pattern again.

Roast pork pie for dinner tonight. And a cheeky little blue brie and date pie to take to work tomorrow.

I once gave my grandma a little stuffed bear. She named him Frank. When I asked her why, she said, "Frankly, I don't know."

I made biscuits! They’re kinda pine tree shaped, but more like pine cones.

Made from scratch without a recipe. And they are delicious.

@Monika I treat recipes more like guidelines, than rules 😉

PSA: Old style SodaStream Bottles do not work in new style machines. The locking mechanism is different and if you put the old style in the new machine, it will eject itself very rapidly, spraying water over everything in a 4m radius, when you try to carbonate it.

Don't ask how I know.

in reply to creek

@creek Maybe, but another user made a very valid point, these bottles have expiry dates beyond which the structural integrity isn't guaranteed.

@hankg The old style ones (four locking lugs) must be over 10 yo. Maybe 15-20? Dunno, been in the cupboard for ages.

Silly novelty song: Beep Beep (1958)
I thought this song was just fiction but no! From the YouTube comments: «The story behind the song is based on a little-known mechanical fact about the "little Nash Rambler" cars. They could be ordered with an optional electrically-operated overdrive system, triggered by a switch on the shift lever. Due to a design flaw on earlier models, once the overdrive was engaged, the transmission couldn't be shifted out of gear without turning the overdrive off. It was all too easy to accidentally turn the overdrive on when shifting, thereby "locking" the car in the last selected gear. Also, due to a fluke in the gear ratios and the way the engine ran, it was actually possible to go somewhat faster in 2nd gear with the overdrive engaged than it was in "high" gear! In certain models of Ramblers with the larger engine and the manual transmission equipped with the overdrive, young men of inquiring minds found that it was possible to exceed 120 mph using this "undocumented feature."»

In a similar vein, the AU Falcon had a speed limiter on the gearbox at 180kph. However, if you shifted back to 4th, and accelerated past 180, you could put it back in to D (5th) and it would keep accelerating.
(NB: I personally did not test this "feature").

Did I mention that the guy who lives at number 22 is a research scientist in cloning?

Should've used a Mastercard.
You would've been more adept at doing it.

Don't use an Apple credit card - those things are made of titanium and might remove a layer of glass along with the ice.

If you have not seen the insanity that is Pui Pui Molcar, you really should. The weirdness goes straight up to eleven! It's all about anthropomorphic Guinea pig cars. See what I mean?

Clearly, dogs don't understand representations. Neither do most humans, so stop feeling special.
