Looking for people who know something about early computing, especially in the Netherlands. Please boost and help me solve the mystery of this custom made plate that used to belong to my grandfather Bram Jan Loopstra, one of the pioneers of Dutch computing. What do the pictures mean? #computing #history

Sadly I can't remember who it was on Mastodon who introduced me to the term "Correctile Dysfunction"

Did you know Monopoly was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in 1903?

Originally ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ it was designed as a protest against the big monopolists like Carnegie & Rockefeller.

But it was Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, who eventually sold it to Parker Brothers after playing a version.

Parker Brothers credited Monopoly with saving their company. Magie died in 1948 without recognition. Darrow became very wealthy & his legend lives on. #history #women #HistoryRemix

PBS just came out with this episode of American Experience, all about the history of the game, and it's fascinating.

Wasn't "The Landlord's Game" originally designed not so much as a protest, but as a way to sell the economic ideas of Henry George?

Hey, I've tweaked how the front page of @kottke works by inlining the Quick Links into the main flow with the "main" posts. Click through for a brief explanation if you're interested. Feedback welcome! kottke.org/23/01/some-design-n…

I know how hard it is to find time to redesign old sites… good luck with this!
in reply to kottke.org

Hadn't thought about it that way, but they do look like ads. That said, once you know that the Quick Links are inlined, it's good that they are visually distinct. I assume this means that the 2x/day QL push won't be happening? Overall, an improvement IMO.

#RestInPeace Apollo astronaut Walt Cunningham. Just 21 months after the Apollo 1 tragedy, Cunningham orbited the Earth as the lunar module pilot for NASA's first crewed Apollo mission to space, Apollo 7, paving the way for the Moon landings. go.nasa.gov/3WEz9uu

Satyendranath Bose was a brilliant theoretical physicist born this week in 1894 in West Bengal (now India).

In 1924, while on faculty at the University of Dacca, he wrote a short paper to Albert Einstein about indistinguishable particles related to quantum theory.

Einstein immediately recognized Bose’ genius, translated the work into German & made sure it was published. Bose ideas led to Bose-Einstein statistics which continue to be studied in quantum mechanics. #science #history #HistoryRemix

I just discovered that many long-time #EconTwitter contributors are migrating to the SocialWeb and can now be found at: econtwitter.net/public/local

Watching the EconTwitter.net local feed results in all sorts of interesting discoveries.

Are there any other instances specifically intended for economists or adjacent folk?

In the 1960s, the sugar industry funded its own research on the effects of sugar on health.

The results didn't look good - for them. Studies revealed a high-sugar diet may increase risks associated with heart attacks, strokes & certain cancers.

But... rather than share emerging findings, the study was curiously halted & the industry successfully shifted blame onto fats.

It took decades to widely link sugary diets to disease. It didn't have to. npr.org/sections/thesalt/2017/… #food #science

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

A prime reason why people don't trust health authorities anymore is because the American food and pharma industries have always influenced health decisions, whether it was with regards to statins/cholesterol, various health parameters, efficacy and safety of drugs to suppression of the side effects of drugs, etc. The same then gets propagated all over the world.
in reply to Ashwin Baindur

Once my research comes out, I will have a lot more to say about the influence of lobbyists & industry in politics & policies.

Will def be covering in detail in my newsletter.

I'll see your sugar industry, and raise you a South African asbestos mine. In the 1960s -70s, their disinformation program was so extensive that the won international awards for occ health and safety.

Been thinking of setting up some donations to help pay for hosting costs here. The problem is, I don't like Patreon at all. If possible, FOSS options are best but I'm okay using it if it at least supports one-time donations. Any ideas? #donations #patreon #patreonsucks
